The Nigerian begging culture isn’t about poverty alone. I’ve never been begged at any airport in Africa. Not in Kigali, Kampala, Accra, NBO, Cape Town, Addis Ababa, Zanzibar. I forgot my phone in the security passage tray in Kigali. They kept it for me for hours. Came back, and the officer gave it to me and asked for nothing in return. Nothing like “show me love”.
The Nigerian culture of begging is tied to entitlement and corruption. Something that started decades ago and has now reached a tipping point.
