Hey folks, popping over here to ask for help! I need recos for true insulation pros in the Bay Area. About to replace the roof on my 1900 house. I have had 5 cos out so far and none seemed to truly know how best to do the work. I want someone I can feel confident in.

If you are in a state with a backlogged queue, group studies are likely under consideration. But are they a good fit? Check out our new paper that looks at when to use them and how!
The Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC)@IRECUSA

As an increasing number of #DER projects seek to interconnect to the #grid, the #interconnection process has slowed in many states. Our new report provides guidance on the use of “group studies,” an emerging practice to streamline the process: irecusa.org/resources/thin…

Are you coming to the #IRECVisionSummit? Looking forward to spending a whole day talking about distributed interconnection challenges and solutions with solar and storage advocates from across the US!
The Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC)@IRECUSA

This #IRECVisionSummit 2023 panel will discuss solutions to some of the major barriers facing #interconnection today, with a focus on available & near-term actions that regulators, utilities, & #DER stakeholders can move to adopt in their jurisdictions: reg.eventmobi.com/irec2023/pages…

Has any US utility deployed a true DERMS system across all or most of their system on a non-pilot basis? I want to see if the regulator has a use/performance monitoring plan.

@gruetz Just me or does that look more like a power plant than a building with a bunch of offices and courtrooms?

@ArnoHarris But if you cannot connect the generation for 8 years if you build at bulk system scale, what is the time value of the money? Is it cheaper if it can't actually be built when we need it?

I need to break the year into 4 sequential chunks based upon how load changes in CA. e.g. is it best to put June-Aug together, or say July-Sept? I need to do the same for a 24 hour load profile. What can I look at to best illustrate the load variations in CA in this manner?

Sweet little nuggets out of the @California_ISO interconnection cluster improvement plan. Cluster 14 has 94.4 GW, with just 65.5 GW at the POI - nearly 1/3 of capacity behind the POI. This is the new approach - lots of energy behind a software limited POI.

Anyone who cares about clean energy deployment should care about interconnection. And most should probably also know a lot more about it. In this great conversation with @johnffarrell, I had fun digging into why interconnection matters and some key ways to improve it.

@drvolts My office is a beautiful 20 minute walk from my home. I think this plays a HUGE role in why I prefer to work in my office. A pleasant transition from work to not-work. If I had a grueling commute I would feel totally different about it.

@kaleekreider @ewesoff Will it? How much does that take into account the not-insignificant uncertainty that transmission will be built, the costs associated with getting that done, and the costs associated with the wait to do so?

@tommercer @efwendt These look good, thanks. A no cost loan with some big incentives could be appealing. Slashing energy use likely isn’t since she doesn’t pay the utility bill.

Heat pump?: I live in a 6 unit apartment building in SF. The units have a hodgepodge of heating solutions, none keep the flats that warm, and some are downright cold. One of my neighbors has finally had enough of being cold 🥶 and is pushing the landlord for a solution. 🧵

@tommercer @efwendt Thanks Tom. I figured the precise solution is going to depend. The main issue is motivating my landlord to be willing to even look into this. There has to be an economic case to make for her.

@efwendt It isn’t the coldest city by any stretch but it is damp and windy. Manageable with poor heat, but I feel for my neighbor who works at home. Sitting at a desk all day at 58 degrees is a no go.

@skycedar Funny that I have absolutely no recollection of heating systems when I lived in SF. Can't even remember if we had a thermostat or radiators...? The $$$ I dropped on a thick down comforter was worth every penny.

@efwendt @tommercer That is partly what I am asking. I don’t have any issue with mini-splits, if they work in the multi-unit context. I don’t have any idea what really works best for buildings like this. Or if there are cost effective options. The flats are small, none are more than 1,000 sq ft.

@skycedar Fingers crossed for your heat pump encouragement! Maybe @tommercer has some suggestions? Are mini splits on the table for you? What did you mean by "whole building"? A big concern would be how you get heat to each of the bedrooms in each unit without ducts or many heads.

Oh, and this building clearly has no existing HVAC system, I am not even sure how a whole building system would work?

Is there a case to make with the current incentives that she should consider installing a heat pump (either for just the upstairs unit that has the worst heat, or for the whole building)? What could I do to persuade my landlord? Is there any way this pencils out for her?
