Apocalypto is NOT accurate: It both sanitizes & demonizes the Maya to comical levels The village is an anarchic Eden with no war, no farming(!), whose never heard of cities. Absurd: cities writing etc goes back millennia The big city is a absurd dystopia: Sacrifice IS real, but not how the movie shows it: The entire city is like a cartoon depiction of hell, with miles and miles of grey wastelands with armies of slaves toiling in mines and corpses in streets, sacrifice being depicted as a sadistic thing stoned out elites laughing at it for entertainment. Sacrifice was a real practice, but it didn't happen at the scales depicted in the film, and it wasn't bloodsports: It was a specific ritual activity with rules, terms, procedures, theological rationale (Even the Conquistadors and Spanish drew comparisons between Mesoamerican religion and Christianity, and viewed the Aztec etc as "civilized pagans" like the Greeks and Romans!, see: x.com/majora__z/stat…) and was viewed solemnly: We know in Aztec society for example, captured soldiers lived with their captor's family, integrated into the society, and after their sacrifice, were mourned. What you see in Apocalypto would be like a movie showing a bunch of naked people in Medieval Italy who had never heard of the Church or how to Farm, and then 20 miles away the city from Bloodborne or Mordor was there with heads on pikes everywhere and people getting dragged out of their home by church inquisitors to work in the brimstone mines. Mesoamerican civilization had religious violence, warfare, classism, etc, but it was also a bunch of functional societies with priests, merchants, artists, poets, judges and courts, etc: It wasn't a utopia or a dystopia, it was urban civilization with both high culture and terrible flaws/conflicts, like anywhere else in the world. Again, the Spanish themselves acknowledged this: They condemned the paganism and sacrifice, but praised their cities, art, laws, and even specific theological and moral concepts they had.
