Hello Senator Thune,
At 3 AM on Friday, March 27th, in a near-empty chamber, you passed a bill by voice vote that excludes all funding for ICE and CBP.
Let me repeat that: voice vote. No roll call. No record of who was there. No accountability. Just you, Barrasso, and a handful of senators shuffling paper in the dead of night while America slept.
You could have demanded a recorded vote. You chose not to.
You could have held the line for five more days until the House returned. You chose not to.
You could have used the same procedural tools Democrats have used against you for 40 days. You chose not to.
Instead, you gave Chuck Schumer exactly what he asked for, DHS funding minus immigration enforcement, and called it a win. Then you walked to the cameras and blamed the Democrats.
Let's be precise about what you did:
1. You caved to a demand Democrats made on Day 1 of this shutdown. Forty-one days of supposed hardball negotiation, and you settled for their opening offer.
2. You handed them a template. The next time Democrats want to defund any agency — ICE, CBP, or anything else — they now know: just shut down DHS and wait. John Thune will fold at 3 AM.
3. You punted to reconciliation. "Good possibility," you said. Not "we will." Not "guaranteed." Just maybe. Meanwhile, ICE operates on fumes from last year's bill with no certainty of future funding.
The precedent you set:
You have argued for months that the filibuster is sacrosanct. That the 60-vote threshold protects minority rights. That we cannot bend Senate rules for policy wins.
But at 3 AM on Friday, you bent every norm that actually mattered:
• Voice vote to avoid accountability
• Empty chamber to avoid debate
• Midnight deal to avoid scrutiny
• Immediate recess to avoid questions
You'll bend the rules to avoid a fight. You just won't bend them to win one.
What you've actually accomplished:
Democrats demanded ICE restrictions. They got ICE defunded.
Not reformed. Not restrained. Defunded.
And you're out here tweeting about how Democrats are the "Defund the Police" party while you just voted to defund border enforcement at 3 in the morning.
The question you should answer:
Why did this deal have to happen at 3 AM?
Why couldn't it happen at 3 PM, with cameras rolling and every senator on record?
You know why. Because you didn't want your voters to see what surrender looks like.
Here's my message: We saw it anyway.
Stop hiding behind "Democrat obstruction." You're the Majority Leader. You set the schedule. You control the floor. You chose this outcome.
Own it.

@mapleblooded @CanadaMom73 They never resign. They are never held to account. There are never any consequences. They are a dictatorship and Cdns keep voting them in. These are the facts and nothing is going to get better unless the country dissolves and Balkanizes or is taken over by the U.S.

@mapleblooded @IrisUkrainyc He's never going to resign. Liberals will throw themselves on their swords to protect him and nothing will be done. This crap's been going on for 10 years. The gunfile is a perfect example. Look how they treated our witnesses.

Socialism fails because you can't calculate without prices. Mises destroyed this fantasy in 1920 — central planners literally cannot know what to produce or how much without market signals. Venezuela burned through $1 trillion in oil wealth. The Soviet Union collapsed despite controlling half of Europe.
What about the incentive problem? When you divorce effort from reward, productivity craters. Why work hard when your neighbor gets the same paycheck for doing nothing? (Cuba's sugar harvests dropped 75% after collectivization.) Private property rights create the feedback loops that make prosperity possible.
Every socialist experiment ends the same way: shortages, corruption, and people fleeing to capitalist countries. The Berlin Wall kept people IN, not out.

Everyone says they’re against war. Few can actually say no. That takes strength. I’ve said no before, to Soviet rule in Hungary, to the Germans on migration, to the Brusselians pulling us into a war that is not ours. Now I’ll say it again: @ZelenskyyUa, there will be no pro-Ukraine government here! 🇭🇺

SURPRISE!
The USA with it's Navy has been doing much of the heavy lifting for our EU/NATO 'allies' for decades while they spent all their money on other things.
Trump's now turned the tables on them so they're being forced to come out and mumble like this about how AWESOME their naval power is.
And yes, as Konrad is pointing out, this is bullshit.
They ain't got no real navy.
And Trump is done having our military be their workhorse.

MORE CARNEY LIES
The country with the world’s longest Arctic coastline cannot independently operate in its own northern waters during winter.
Canada’s flagship icebreaker, the CCGS Louis S. St-Laurent, was launched in 1966. She’s 60 years old. She is NOT polar class rated.
SIXTY
She was supposed to be decommissioned in 2000. Then 2017.
She’s still in service because nothing exists to replace her.
Many “icebreakers” Carney eludes to ice strengthened patrol boats.
Ice strengthened just means they won’t sink if they run into ice. It doesn’t mean they can “break” a thick layer of ice.
CCGS Louis S. St-Laurent‘s replacement was announced in 2008.
EIGHTEEN YEARS AGO
Originally due in 2017. It is now “scheduled” for 2026.
No ship has been delivered.
The program is old enough to vote.
∙Canada operates nine medium icebreakers, most built in the 1970s and 80s.
NONE are polar-class.
They handle first-year ice in the St. Lawrence and make summer trips north when conditions allow.
∙Russia operates 40+ icebreaking vessels including eight nuclear-powered heavy icebreakers, with ten more planned by 2035.
Canada has zero nuclear icebreakers.
∙Total cost for Canada’s two replacement polar icebreakers: C$4.4 billion. Estimated delivery: 2030 and 2032. If you believe those dates, I have a Northwest Passage to sell you.
∙One of the two replacements is being built in Finland, at a shipyard that was Russian-owned until Davie acquired it in 2023. Canada’s answer to Russian Arctic dominance is literally being constructed in a former Russian yard.
∙Mark Carney just announced C$35 billion in Arctic funding. But the purpose of a system is what it does. And what Canada’s system does is produce announcements and press releases, not ships.
True polar class ships in service capable of breaking thick Arctic ice?
🇺🇸
One heavy (Polar Star, commissioned 1976)
Two medium (Healy, commissioned 1999/2000, and Storis, a converted commercial vessel commissioned August 2025).
🇨🇦
Canada has zero polar-class icebreakers.
So no, @MarkJCarney, you may (or may not) have the second most ice strengthened vessels… but true icebreakers capable of real polar security service?
USA’s pathetic fleet is #2 in the world.
Scott Robertson@sarobertsonca
PM Carney on Canada's contribution to Arctic security: "We already have the second largest icebreaker fleet in the world after Russia. Once our icebreaker program is completed, we will have the largest. We will have 42 icebreakers. The Americans have one."

ACTION ALERT FROM @CJPME : "It is our last chance to demand that Canadian lawmakers drop Bill C-9, and reject pro-Israel efforts to restrict Charter-protected freedoms, including criticism of Israel.
Bill C-9, a law demanded by pro-Israel groups, threatens to repress the Palestine solidarity movement. This includes dangerous restrictions on the ability of Canadians to confront Israeli war criminals on Canadian soil or to expose the use of Jewish communal institutions as venues for illegal land sales. Without shame, they are doing this at the exact moment Israel and the US are devastating Lebanon and Iran and continue to restrict lifesaving access to Gaza.
Israel’s foreign interference strategy in Canada is to emotionally misdirect Canadians into repressing critics of Israel by dangerously conflating human-rights based activism with hateful conduct. Israel wants heavy restrictions put on those that oppose genocide and regime change wars.
In the face of Israel’s campaign of foreign interference, we need to send a strong message to the Canadian government that we will not stand for any collusion, witting or unwitting, with Israel to undermine the Charter of Rights and Freedoms of Canadians. We will not enact Israel’s agenda of transnational repression.
Now that Bill C-9 has been passed by the House of Commons, join us in emailing Canada's Senate to tell them that we don’t need to import Israel’s repressive agenda to Canada. Reject Bill C-9." cjpme.org/stop_c9
