Album of the day. As much as the "smooth jazz" tag tends to get overused, there's no way to deny the greatness of George Benson's incomparable artistry and his 1976 commercial breakthrough, Breezin', which was released 50 years ago today. Always known for his exquisitely laidback guitar style, in the vein of Wes Montgomery and Charlie Christian, George Benson employed his Stevie Wonder-like singing on this 1976 bestseller, propelling him from a respected jazz guitarist into a mainstream pop and R&B superstar. Helmed by the great Tommy LiPuma with Claus Ogermann's lavish orchestrations, Benson and other noted players, such as the great Ronnie Foster, Harvey Mason, Phil Upchurch, Jorge Dalto, and Ralph MacDonald, created a pleasantly mellow sound that weaved his jazz roots with pop and funky R&B influences that were quite popular at that time.
