I work in insurance. I can promise you if the dog bit the UPS driver, he'd have a slam dunk lawsuit on his hands. Multiple things can be true at once: I love dogs, and I hate seeing them hurt. AND this dog was not under the control of the owner. It doesn't matter if he was on his own property. This is not a case of the dog attacking a home invader. The UPS driver has a legitimate reason to be on the property. Leaving your dog off leash is a high-risk low-reward action. The best example I know of from my work was a large dog (145+ pounds) lazing in a garage while the homeowner was doing yard work. The dog heard a Harley Davidson approach, ran out into the street right in front of the bike, the rider couldn't avoid it, hit the dog and went over the handle bars and broke his back. The dog died, and the homeowner settled a million dollar lawsuit. Keep your dog fenced or leashed. It is seriously not worth it.

@HPluckrose Okay, I'm glad you enjoyed it Helen, but you don't need to put ranch on the brisket. If you're going to tell me iced tea is wrong, I have to respond in kind for the sake of my culture.

OMG! 18-hour smoked brisket with fried pickles, waffle fries and “rayanch” sauce. This is the most delicious thing I have ever eaten.

@Quillette Why is soccer the only sport where people who hate it try to convince fans of the sport that they should hate it too. Just don't watch it you fucking whiny asshole.

Every four years the world gathers to remind Americans that soccer is boring. The World Cup arrives, a billion people weep with joy, and everyone who wasn't indoctrinated before the age of six sits there waiting for something…anything to happen. Then suddenly it almost does. Then just as quickly it doesn't. Then it almost does again. This is the rhythm of the world's most boring game. It's “the beautiful game,” and for most of my adult life I’ve been patiently informed, usually by someone who calls it fútbol, that I simply lack the sophistication to appreciate it. But they’re wrong. Soccer isn’t beautiful. It’s boring, and it has nothing to do with sophistication. - @RLynch43576

@ClayTravis They fouled the Argentine player in the turnover, then scored from the resulting attack. It was the right call.

@wil_da_beast630 Mexico is our biggest rival in international soccer. Unless you have Mexican heritage you can't cheer for them. To real US soccer fans this is tantamount to treason.

Real question for the page: with Team USA NOT playing, what's the even theoretical issue with rooting for a friendly state? Would anyone have had a problem with his wearing a 3 Lions England shirt?

@michaelmalice @teafortillerman @grok It's kind of beautiful that you can ask Grok to explain something to a person, and watch that person have a whole conversation with it and never back down despite being proven wrong repeatedly.

I'm aware but the comparison is rather stretched.
Mulberrynotfake@mulberryno47371

@GadSaad In June 1986 Maradona hand balled the ball in to the net, putting Argentina into the lead over England. Argentina went on to win the game 2:1 and the world cup. Maradona admited he cheated. It was in the same stadium as England v Mexico match 2026.

My wife is a direct descendant Austin Roe. I come from Irish immigrants fleeing the famine. Would it be racist to teach my son to be proud of the American heritage on his mother's side of the family? You were proud of your grandfather's service in WW2 and you should be. Maybe I missed something, but I don't understand your point. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austin_Roe

You deleted the post that I was responding to. You replied directly to me with something along the lines of "Yeah, I do think it's pretty cool" and then deleted that. Now you're showing me this. Is this a retort? Your grandfather sounds like a cool guy. Were you expecting me to be hostile to his service or something?

@slidecube @NoContextBrits I’m sure all scholars of antiquity agree to defer to the opinions of Greg from Austin on these matters. No structure from 560, or indeed before that, could possibly ever exist without his say-so.

All of human history is a blink of an eye in the context of the age of the Earth. The age of the United States is short compared to the age of England, sure. The United States went from crossing the country in covered wagons to landing on the moon in under 100 years. That's pretty fucking incredible. Who cares how young the US is compared to other nations when they pulled that off? "America is just a young country compared to others." Cool. Whatever.

Because we are the best version of what England could have been. The irony is you're talking to a person who lived in England for nearly 4 years and has genuine love for that nation. But I have no truck with this bullshit perspective of "we're better than you because our pubs are older than your country." Your country and culture won't exist if it stays on the current track that it's on. And that brings me no joy.

@slidecube @NoContextBrits As for your flag, why is it red, white and blue? Why is your national anthem the same tune as an English drinking song? Why do you have common law and trial by jury? Why are we having this conversation in English?

It's not offensive. What makes it offensive is the snide comments like "My local is older than your country." As an American who genuinely loves England, and even lived there for nearly 4 years, I wish the English would match this sense of national pride for more than just a World Cup before the England we know and love is gone.

The one on the moon signifies that we put it there and it got washed out by the Sun's radiation. It was an American flag placed there by American greatness. And you still arrest people for saying mean things on Facebook. And the most common name given to newborn boys in England and Wales last year was Mohammed. You want to talk to me about a white flag meaning surrender? You're losing a war right now without a single shot being fired.

@slidecube @NoContextBrits England has lost quite a few wars against the French, but has probably won more. We've fought against them loads of times over the past thousand years or so.
