My kids' daycare is closing (with a month's notice) because of a reduction in federal, DC & private funding. They're closing 4 sites, 3 of them east of the river. Most of their clients are families with great financial needs. A massive blow to affordable, high-quality childcare.

The amazing thing about this story is how Bezos seems to think he's the first guy to try using data to fix a newspaper. He clearly missed the 2010's when newspapers discovered that cat videos will always drive more traffic than reporting that serves the civic good.

After a cancer center insisted my elderly father needed a full body PET scan for which it charged $65,000, I suspect that cancer centers treating people with extremely expensive procedures even though they have a very short life expectancy are responsible for a big chunk of this.
