After working 7 years doing oilfield service, you could never convince me that it's heaps of dead dinos. When it's at surface, a thousand metres below surface, and inside mountains, how could it possibly be dinosaurs? Some places, it's as thin as water. But then go across the river and it's thick like peanut butter. I've heard from field operators that wells can repressurize after being shut it and they will flow on their own. I believe it's a naturally regenerating resource; it just a while for the Earth to produce it.
