Pongo went over the rainbow bridge back in March 2024. Amber has joined our family as a foster from Scout's Honor Rescue. It's been a long time since she's had a family of her own, but no more stray life for her!

The seasons may change, but the commitment remains the same. Every day, rain or shine, our rangers head out to protect the wildlife and wild places in their care. This year, Tsavo has been blessed with unusually generous rains. Favourable conditions often bring a decline in illegal activities, veterinary treatments, and field emergencies. But even the greenest times require constant vigilance. Last month alone, our 28 SWT/KWS Anti-Poaching Teams and Canine Unit patrolled 4,527 kilometres on foot – that’s about the equivalent of walking coast-to-coast across the United States, or from Nairobi to Cape Town. Over the course of the month, field teams made 23 arrests and removed 1,018 snares from the landscape. Long may the good times prevail – but be the conditions challenging or favourable, we will be there. How do our orphans spend their evenings? At our Nairobi and Kaluku Nurseries, each orphan returns to their own stable at dusk – a stable lined with freshly cut branches and browse. A Keeper sleeps on a raised platform inside the stable, within reach of the elephant's trunk - so should a trunk snake up reaching for comfort at any hour of night, they will always be rewarded. Milk is mixed fresh every three hours through the night and hand-delivered in two big bottles. At our Voi, Umani and Ithumba Reintegration Units, the orphans share larger, communal stockades and Keepers sleep nearby rather than inside. Fuelled by a bottle of milk, Bumpy is our newest rescue. After his mother died, the little orphan spent at least a day huddled by her body before the Kenya Wildlife Service found him and brought him into our care. When you’re an older chap you get to wear an older fashioned jumper 🤗 Peter had to have a dental today as he had infected rotten teeth. He’s been such a good boy, so sweet and loving ❤️ He’ll be heading to Fast Friends Greyhound Adoption Center in New Hampshire where he will be looking for a new home. In Spain it’s so hard to get older big black boys adopted but we’ve heard that many Greyhound adopters over the pond love a snoozy low key Galgo to join them during retirement. We often joke that Kaikai loves the mud bath so much than she would sleep in it, if she could. This is actually more fact than fiction, as she sometimes manages to catch a few winks in the water! Such was the case here. She turned herself around like the face of a clock, took the briefest of siestas, gave herself another quarter turn just for good measure, and then resumed relaxation. We know better than to rush her – it’s Kaikai’s world; we just live in it! Kaikai is one of the youngest orphans in our care. Her mother died of natural causes when she was just a few days old. Twenty years ago, our Keepers heard a rhino calf crying in the Nairobi National Park forest. They found him running in circles, completely blind, with no sign of his mother. She was never found. Surgery couldn't restore his sight – a congenital condition had taken it permanently. A blind bull rhino cannot survive in the wild. So we made Maxwell a promise: the Nairobi Nursery would be his forever home. Two decades later, he has become an institution in his own right. Max is the Nursery patriarch – a gentle, steady presence who has watched over generations of orphaned elephants pass through on their journey back to the wild. They adore him. Many stop by his stockade each morning to say hello, reaching their trunks through the bars or tapping on the gate so he knows they're there. He recognises each one by sound and scent alone. He is a double survivor: a member of a critically endangered species – black rhinos suffered a 98% population decline in Kenya between 1970 and 1983 – and a rhino who has built a rich, contented life without ever seeing it. Sienna came into us in November. Endless puppies and then a brutal life on the streets alone and sick. She used to stare at the wall. In just over 2 weeks she travels to her forever home in Wales. She says she’s a little nervous but thinks it might be nice ❤️
