The United Grand Lodge of England, along with Freemasons across England, Wales, the Isle of Man, and the Channel Islands, has opposed plans unveiled earlier this month to classify Freemasonry as an affiliation that must be formally reported. Under the proposal, police officers and staff would have to declare any current or former involvement in organisations that operate with a clear hierarchy, keep their membership private, and require loyalty or mutual protection among members.
