@DeaconSports As a state fan, the assistant coach hirings will be critical. Would love to see Hodge from a recruiting standpoint and also a vet taking a backseat support role. To be perfectly honest we really didn’t have many options and it’s a tough sell for WF and NCST

I’m sure Gainey will get the “mad at Wade/sentimental alum hiring” money in year 1. Will be interesting to see what happens after that. Seems a bit of an over correction from what happened with Will Wade, but we’ll see how it works out for them.

@DonnellySports Donovan always made sense to me, more from Billy’s side, as he would land at a marquee destination instead of wasting away the rest of his career in a rebuilding NBA job. If UNC is waiting for someone else, they better have assurances or they will look like fools

@snbaker14 Could definitely be posturing. The UNC job has already gotten a few guys raises at their current schools. But if it is going to be Donovan or someone else, it should happen pretty quick, right? Lloyd is the only reason to be waiting?

Is everyone expecting Tommy Lloyd to be willing to win a National Championship at Arizona, and at the parade say, 'Thank you, it was fun! I'll see y'all in Chapel Hill!' Obviously, Arizona hasn't won it all yet, but if they do, that has to eliminate Lloyd from the mix, right?

#random Tommy Lloyd is doing a great job at Arizona. I love the mesh of size, skill and toughness that he consistently recruits. His 20 years experience as an assistant coach (under Mark Few) has paid tremendous dividends.

This is a hire with a very high ceiling. But, we really don't know anything about the 'floor'. We can have all of the faith and hope in the world...but, we really won't know until we get going. Pre NIL/Transfer portal I would not have been very accepting / excited about this. I think the role of coaches and the characteristics that define successful coaches have changed; and I hope that translates into reason to believe that an assistant with no previous head coaching experience has a higher likelihood of generating success in power conference than was previously the case. In recent years, names like Tommy Lloyd at Arizona, Jon Scheyer at Duke, Jai Lucas at Miami, Luke Loucks at FSU, and even Hubert Davis at UNC (and to a lesser extent, Kevin Young at BYU, Jake Diebler at Ohio State) have successfully made the transition. With the resources we have at our disposal and the potential to have a strong-to-decent core of returnees from a candidate pool of McNeil, Cloer, Wilkins, Able, Arcenaux, Deng, Sagnia, Langdon and hopefully Trevon Carter-Givens then the hope would be that we aren't starting from scratch/total rebuild. Very interested and excited to see what kind of staff comes together here.

@scott_fowler Dukes “flaw” is that they recruit the best freshman class and rely on those freshman. They need to find a way to balance the portal with veteran players

Um….. no. Not even close. That said, if Duke continues to skimp on finding an elite point guard to go with its always-elite bigs, it’s never going to win another championship.

Scheyer is a great coach but holy shit. 2 years in a row. We had a timeout, the players should be told that You could just hold the ball at any point, the players should be told that One of the worst second half’s I’ve ever seen. Makes me sick

Crazy thought: I love the idea of hiring Matt McMahon under Gainey and giving him the keys to the offense. He’s available. He’s been a head coach. He had great offenses at Murray State. Yes he failed at LSU - but it was because of NIL disadvantages and bad injury luck.
