the reality is that big tech structurally can't hire the ppl who actually get ai from both a deep tech or a taste perspective, cuz those ppl are founding companies or already have context that makes them too expensive/misaligned with corp incentives. so you get this adverse selection loop where the available exec pool is ppl who were at other big tech co's & those ppl are just big co peeps through & through (i.e. they will often struggle in any uncertainty or fast pace or lack of resources).

March has been rough. I'm going to be laughing about it when we hit our next monthly high. I know that. Not because I'm blindly optimistic. Because I've been through enough of these to know how they end. You keep running the system. You keep making the ads. You stay focused on what you can control. And eventually the conditions shift back in your favor. That's not a guarantee of an exact timeline. It's a guarantee that quitting during the hard stretch is the only move that actually kills the business. So you don't quit. You keep showing up. Every day. No matter what the numbers say. That's the whole game.

there's a huge misconception about schedulers, so let me clear this up once and for all you commonly hear people saying that "schedulers will kill your reach" first of all: no, they are not ask yourself this question: duolingo and all these companies getting millions of views via socials - do you think they make their employees upload the content via a phone? of course not so, what is happening that leads to the conception of views being lower? (this is based on months of research, being a founder in the space, and knowing someone who was a product manager at tiktok for four years) what you have to understand, whether it is tiktok, insta, or any other large scale platform, is that they look at hundreds of different factors to assess any given account and piece of content there are dozens of machine and reinforcement learning algos running concurrently, which means if one or multiple variables are changing, so is your reach but here's the kicker: this is a temporary state until those algos have recalibrated and get to again understand what it is you're publishing take, for example, tiktok: if you edit your slideshows within the app, tiktok knows exactly the words you're typing into the keyboard and slide this obviously then makes it easier for all these algos to find the right audience consequently, when you use a scheduler, they lose these data points and here's something even the most technical people in the space don't know about: tiktok uses what's called "user interest vector space modelling" what this means in plain english: tiktok tags both you as a creator and your viewers with interest categories, and the algo only distributes your content within the scope of those tags this is exactly why niche shifts are so painful - the moment you start posting different content, your reach gets pushed to the wrong audience until the system relearns who you are and it gets more interesting: tiktok also runs pre-publication content scoring - machine learning that assesses the quality of your content before it even gets shown to a single person this is also likely one of the reasons behind the dreaded "0 views" posts - the algo scored your content low before it ever had a chance so when you switch to a scheduler and lose some of those native data points, the system has to re-score and re-tag your content from scratch temporary recalibration - not punishment instagram boss adam mosseri has indirectly also confirmed this recently in an ama: he encouraged people to schedule content on instagram because that allows meta's algos to already learn what the content is about and find the correct target audience right away this is then the reason why you normally see lower views when you start using a scheduler (btw, this is the same behavior that occurs when you change up your content style and why it's generally recommended to stick to a format once you found a good one) however, over time and as jack has shown in his post, the algos again understand who to show your content to this is why we recommend our customers to simply keep publishing if they notice a sudden decrease in views (that's literally why we launched with automations as our killer feature back in may of last year) another issue with schedulers is that they tend to attract people who want to save time and not spend the adequate time creating great content with a meritocratic system like tiktok where it's mostly about content quality, this can then often lead to lower views (and these same people probably don't spend time replying to comments, engaging in their respective communities, liking/bookmarking relevant content - which can all help with reach) and finally before any of you nerds wanna point this out: yes, as a founder in the space, i am obviously biased

starting a consumer company is basically opting into pain as a lifestyle. you need this weird, almost contradictory stack which is taste + timing, future intuition + present execution, & culture fluency + product rigor. most ppl have like… one of these. maybe two if they’re lucky. oh the worst thing is that there’s no clean feedback loop. ain’t no tidy dashboards telling you you’re right. it’s mostly vibes, weak signals, & ridiculously delayed validation if it comes at all (kinda like being in a toxic situationship). you’re effectively betting on something that doesn’t fully exist yet, using instincts you can’t quite articulate, in a market that will happily ignore you until it suddenly doesn’t. this is one of the most asymmetric games you can play but also one of the least coherent while you’re in it. i think of it as playing a video game in hall of fame difficulty with no tutorial & half the UI missing.
