Related to this is the concept of Christian denominations that ought to exist but don't, like the Binitarians, the Chrismatists (like the Baptists, but they split over Confirmation by full immersion in oil) and the Ascensionists (the counterpart to the Pentecostalists)

Why isn’t there a field of cryptotheology, studying religions and beliefs that are unreliably reputed but never proven to exist?

Nothing sums up the poverty of civic leadership in the city like a crowd of people photographing a derelict pub that campaigners have spent years trying to reopen. Those leaders bleat about ‘opportunity’ and ‘ambition’ but can’t recognise it when it’s staring them in the face.
