For thousands of years, Moroccan cavalry have been known for their power and fierce fighting spirit, something confirmed not by their own accounts, but by the testimonies of foreign armies who had to withstand their charges on the battlefield. The Archbishop of Toledo wrote in the 13th century: “They rushed upon our line like lions.” Portuguese royal chronicler Damião de Góis wrote in the 16th century: “The horsemen of Morocco fought with the ferocity of lions, without giving a single step back.” British Diplomat John Windus writes in the 18th century: “They come on with great fury, and their manner of fighting is to fire as they advance, and immediately fall in with their swords.”
