@cutthefinalrope Ppl are so kneejerk about equating any sort of discourse about privilege to criticism. It's a privilege to have community that doesn't mean you need to feel sinful for it!

Thread is true but, this part isn't true, for example youth homelessness often being caused by lack of supportive family...being disabled (housebound/bedbound) and difficulty meeting people...lack of wealthy supportive friends/connections to lean back on...
兔兒神@chenchenwrites

i loathe the notion that human companionship/community is a "privilege," one that you can smugly criticize other people (strangers!) for having. it's so bitter and self-centered.

@himmatb15 Severe ME affects the entire family, and everyone feels its weight. But please remember: The heaviest burden is carried by the person who is ill - not by their carers. I wish I could carry more of Mila's burden. Most parents feel that way.

@awgaffney Sad opportunists in positions of power are an infinitely more serious problem! Though in your defense, they do make you take that hypocritical oath In seriousness, I do have a question, maybe you have an answer: when you’re there, is it just a tank?

@awgaffney FYI Gaffney works at a think tank whose entire thesis is that the US spends too much on healthcare not bc of corporate profiteering in medicine, insurance, private equity, pharma, device makers, etc, but bc of “low value” care - ie patients need LESS healthcare not more/better

The first one (“tidally locked”) is something that is quite common. All of Jupiter’s and Saturn’s major moons (dozens in total) are tidally locked. Tidal locking happens because tidal forces will produce a slight bulge in the moon’s shape. If the bulge *isn’t* facing the planet, you get energy dissipation as the bulge moves, which over time removes rotational energy from the system until the perfect period of rotation is reached. You can even get a planet tidally locked to the star if it’s close enough (Mercury is tidally locked except terms and conditions apply). (Small “moons” that are basically captured asteroids will, eventually, also tidally lock, but their tidal force is so small that it would take many times longer than the lifetime of the solar system in many cases). The second one is genuinely a freak occurrence, no other moon in our solar system lines up this way.

Yeah dude the moon just so happens to spin at the exact rate so that it looks perfectly stationary to us – and then also it’s exactly 400 times smaller than the sun but the sun is 400 times further away by chance so that eclipses match up perfectly

My first thought in finding out what the latitude of a place is is like "touchscreen map of earth with latitudes" like for some reason its not to directly ask the latitude bc way back when if u asked that you'd scroll for ten years then die
TOADETTES A LIGHTWEIGHTTT 😭croissant@cutthefinalrope

Here's the thing which is that back in the 2000s to ask a question to google 70% of the time you didn't ask the question but you asked for the TOOL to get the answer bc there was no pull up feature n I feel the shift has drastically changed communication and thinking

The concept of knowing where you'd get an answer is a field of thinking that has been lost , I wasn't ever good at it but I'm just saying like. There's no more scaffolding
