💬 Viewpoint: Mass abstract submissions in #MedEd have led to inflated metrics, less meaningful research, and misaligned incentives for trainees and institutions. ja.ma/4qlJES1

🎗️ Today is Rare Cancer Day. Appendix cancer is rare, impacting just 2–9 people per million in the U.S., yet studies show its incidence is rising. 👉 New patients, caregivers and families can find helpful resources here: acpmp.org

This @CR_AACR study identifies the overactive gene MICAL2 in deadly pancreatic cancer — linking it to tumor growth, spread, & poor outcomes. 🔍 MCC's Dr. Pablo Tamayo, Dr. Jill Mesirov, Dr. Herve Tiriac, & Dr. Andrew Lowy explore how the gene is a potential treatment target: bit.ly/4g5EEet.

Early VTEs after CRS-HIPEC are more serious than late VTEs and associated with primary ovarian cancer and extensive cytoreduction. Hence, we need alternative prophylaxis strategies and clinical scrutiny in such patients @sohinikhan ow.ly/mZ5O50UBQSt @SKMaithel

@PSOGI_EC Good point! Since we saw that the average PCI for those with a histologically benign omentum was 6 so maybe that could be a cutoff if one were to stratify needing omentectomy by PCI but we did not have enough n to say for sure. #ASOchat

Very pertinent question! 31% occult disease is high. That itself merits routine omentectomy. Stratification according to PCI would help - is these a subgroup where it’s not needed? Authors conclusions very valid!! Recurrence rate of 20% in residual omentum high: consider limitations of imaging/diag lap in detecting early dz
Annals of Surgical Oncology@AnnSurgOncol

Q3. Of 43 pts w/residual omentum, 24 (55.8%) recurred, including 9 (20.9%) with omental recurrence. Do you believe that routine omentectomy can help prevent recurrence and improve survival? Is there a role for omentectomy in patients in which a CC0 during CRS can't be achieved?

@AnnSurgOncol Isn’t the omentum a site of recurrence and an area occult disease can hide based on absorption of peritoneal fluid.

we agree and do not routinely exclude omentectomy given those concerns and only did not with very low PCI or MIS cases but don't have enough n to see if there was recurrence in those patients
