The labelling of pagans as Neo-Nazis or associating them with Nazism is often just the modern iteration of an ancient line of attack. In antiquity, Christians would derisively refer to those who maintained traditional religion and ancestral rites as τὰ ἔθνη (ta ethnē), “the nations,” in Greek, or gentiles, those belonging to tribes/clans, in Latin, both deployed with the connotation that such people were insufficiently universalistic in their religious practices and outlook. Their rites and gods subsisted in cultural particularity, closely entwined with family, city, and ethnos. They were parochial, insular, small-minded. In contrast, the Church is καθολικός (katholikos), universal, transcending all such particularities and bonds in worship of the one, true God. The revival of pagan religiosity today is often undertaken within specific ethnic or cultural contexts: Heathenry for the Norse and Germanic, Romuva among the Lithuanians, Rodnovery for the Slavic, Hellenism for Greeks, and so on. Critics perceive this as an atavistic turn away from the universal to the particular and to a world more relativistic and exclusivist; it imperils the messianic project or the so-called progress of history. In the modern world, Nazi Germany is considered the most diabolical exemplar of where this trajectory leads. Thus, critics of pagans and paganism leverage “Nazi” and “Nazism” in their rhetorical attacks against us, associating any and all manifestations of pre-Christian religiosity with incipient ethnic chauvinism and exclusivism, and discrediting the idea that there could ever be a healthy and peaceable celebration of “ethnic” religions.
