I love this woman. Claudia Riegler of Austria, 52, became the oldest woman to compete in a Winter Olympics. This is her fifth consecutive Games. She competed in the women’s parallel giant slalom, which is snowboard racing head-to-head. Yesterday morning, she beat out sixteen other snowboarders, all of whom are at least two decades younger, to qualify for the elimination bracket. She lost in the Round of 16 by just over a second to 30-year-old Ester Ledecká of the Czech Republic. Incredibly, she was told 22 years ago by a coach that she was “too old” to compete.
