- Ken Thompson wrote Unix and the B language. - Dennis Ritchie took B and built C. - Linus Torvalds took Unix’s ideas and C, and built Linux. - Someone took Linux cgroups and namespaces and invented containers. - Guido van Rossum used C to build Python. - Engineers used Python to build sophisticated AI models. - Google built Kubernetes to run their internal workloads at scale. - Now every major AI company runs their LLMs on Kubernetes( which runs Linux underneath ) Every layer of the modern AI stack sits on the shoulders of someone who came before. And now Youtube influencers making a butt load of money building AI home labs using the work of all these folks😀

The crazy, beautiful thin line of air between us and space. Living in orbit I would often look to Earth's horizon, marvelling at how bizarrely thin our atmosphere is. Half of all air is in the first 3 mi/5 km. A common running distance. Sometimes big thunderheads were visible, pushing to the edge of the stratosphere. Above that, the coloured aura of the mesosphere, and then eternal empty blackness. Lit by an occasional star, like a small lightbulb in a vast darkened hall. Let's appreciate and take responsibility for our planet.

GLM 5.1 just dropped. 45.3 on the coding evaluation using Claude Code as the harness. 2.6 points behind Claude Opus 4.6 at 47.9. Nearly 10 points ahead of GLM 5 at 35.4. An open source model is within striking distance of the best closed source coding model in the world. Z.ai keeps shipping. The gap between open source and frontier keeps shrinking. Need to get GLM 5.1 on BridgeBench and see how it performs in real vibe coding workflows. bridgebench.ai

GPUs never retire if you take care of them. this RX 580 8GB has been with me since 2017 and is not even close to done. just took it apart again to repaste, bangkok heat dries thermal compound fast. if you own GPUs, maintain them. clean the heatsink, repaste every couple months on load, check the fans. they last. this is something the mac fancy desk crowd will never understand.

In China, washing machines are evolving fast. Triple-drum machines can run three separate loads at once. One main drum plus two smaller ones for delicates, all with separate water systems. Some models use AI and can be controlled from your phone.

'Male masturbation may have an adaptive benefit: it flushes out damaged, stored sperm.' New Oxford research suggests that the longer sperm are stored before ejaculation, the lower their quality, with implications for men trying to conceive and IVF treatment. Find out more ⬇️

Humans are returning to the Moon for the first time in 54 years exactly one week from today. This is not being talked about enough.

Elon Musk on UFOs: I don’t get it. We have 100-megapixel cameras that can see your nose hairs, but all we get are pictures of fuzzy blobs. Can somebody take a shot of a UFO with an actual camera, for the love of God?

OpenAI shutting down Sora is the most predictable outcome of misunderstanding consumer behavior. Everyone grossly overestimates how creative people want to be. 99% of humans simply want to scroll and zone out instead of spending energy conceptualizing, editing, and creating videos. No matter how much the barrier to creation is lowered by a single prompt. It still takes effort and a fair amount of creative thinking. Even Instagram has 2 billion users. But hardly ~10 million (or 0.5%) would be serious creators. So any AI consumer app betting on "with [new_app], everyone becomes a creator!" is being delusional and will go down the same way. After all the word "consumer" exists for a reason. They consume. They don't produce (or even want to lol)
