Oh hello! You say you want admin rights? You want to play in the big leagues? Ok. Take mine. No, no charge, I'm giving them to you.
Just know that now you are expected to be a subject matter expert in no less than 50 different areas of IT, all spanning a collective skill level of 4 to 5 decades of experience, each. No, ChatGPT won't see you through it all, after all it can't stand up an entire server nor can it config a VPN, firewall or switch.
Yes, you get PTO, lots actually, but they won't always honor it, meaning you'll be "off" but you'll be expected to answer calls and emails, routinely, when you're not in the office. You see all that hard work you put in for the weekly presentation at the All Hands meeting? Yeah nobody listened so they have not actually retained anything you said and while you're out something's going to go down and no one's going to know how to fix it. This gets old fast.
They'll draw you in with a pretty decent salary but you're going to be expected to work long hours even though on their website and in their job advertisements they'll claim that they have a good work life balance. There's no such thing in IT. 🤣
Oh and if you think that you're going to have a smooth time just keep in mind that every single person who contacts you at work is only doing so because they're either under incredible stress or have a major problem that you're going to be expected to fix even if you don't know how to do it 100% And you have to keep a great attitude because if you're nasty to them even though it's okay they're nasty to you you're the one that's going to be going to HR not them.
That's right you have to give service with a smile. Then as you're trying to work through the problem in your brain relying on what you do know and trying to look stuff up they'll say really dumb things like oh well I could have googled it too not realizing that no they couldn't have done it which is why you're there but once again you have to be nice. All the time without fail.
And that's if they're not telling you their personal problems like you're a bartender serving up drinks during happy hour. Oh yes you're going to learn everything you never wanted to know about your coworkers because they're going to tell you either while they're still angry and dishing out snarky comments while simultaneously apologizing to you for their behavior because they know they're being rude (and don't care) or they'll be crying so if you don't have a a box of tissues in your cubicle or office I suggest you get one or 12.
The laundry list of certifications you're going to be expected to have are going to cost you the same amount as if you bought an SUV and don't think that they're going to reimburse you for it because most places don't. If they do you pretty much have to get a C or above and some of this stuff is not always easy to achieve that.
For context the OSCP certification has a 4% pass rate. That means that 96% of the people who take it fail it. There is no such thing as a C on that exam although if you sit for it you're going to be wishing that there was. When you ask for help they're going to say to you try harder because that's their official motto and you're going to learn to hate those words so you might as well start hating them now. Don't worry everyone does.
After about 6 months you're going to be annoyed and you're going to start to appreciate all the IT people in the past that you didn't think were working but were playing games on their computers all day and just so happened to be privileged enough to get admin rights.
It's all going to come into focus.
So you take mine and I wish you all the best but if you don't want them now then the next IT person you see I ask that you please be kind to them because they work exceptionally hard probably just as hard as you do but it's because of them that you're able to use the computer you use for work.
Please don't forget that. ☺️
