@beyondwattsuk @Julian_H0ffmann Great work and a really nice website as well! May I ask what the ads-b source data is? My version had only "simulated" flights along all existing flight routes but no real data.

Here is a selection of the *coolest* 3D maps, visuals, and map-like worlds from the past months you don't want to miss. Wonderful dynamic, interactive, static, creative or artistic visuals PART 3. #Dataviz #3dMap #GIS #3D #Cartography #GISchat 1/20🧵

@jesuslares_me The node tree is a bit of a mess, I need to clean it up and play around with it myself first.

@AeCartographer No scripting but the Blender Spreadsheet Importer addon with data columns as named attributes.

@spatialoccasio1 Awesome work ✨ did this require any scripting? I didn't think CSV import was in geo nodes yet.

@spatialoccasio1 having said that, it's fairly easy to place an object at a certain lat/lon on the sphere using gimbal rotations. I should do a video on this..

Finally worked out great circles in #blender; this is the flight path from London to Seattle. The trick is to make circle slightly wider than sphere, and use Gimbal rotate mode.

@stevefaeembra I've been scratching my head over great circles (and best practice concerning geographic coordinate translations in general) in Blender. Could you elaborate a bit on your method?

Gimbal rotation mode seems to be the easiest way to place points on or rotate circles around the sphere using lat/lon. Not too sure about the maths yet...🤔

@pinakographos Ah, sweet memories! RRT1 and 2 was the foundation of my american geography knowledge! And together with these two classics I guess mappy games was my thing back then...

@robhawkes Interesting - I've only managed to import point objects from csv but this looks cool!

Couldn't resist tinkering with Blender 3.0 and visualising flight paths from JSON using the Animation Nodes plugin. Very early stages but made good progress in a couple hours of tinkering. Mostly learning my way around Blender! 😅

@simon_eliasson Thanks! I haven't decided if or how I will make high-res versions available. But if you have any questions about the workflow, I'd be happy to guide you.

@spatialoccasio1 This is lovely! Do you mind share a high res file? I have been trying to follow the tutorials online to create my own sthlm vintage map, but my computer doesn’t seem to have enough power to make it an bearable process.

One last render from Bryce Canyon before moving on to something else. Great fun to develop one simple DEM with some tools and techniques from both GIS and the more creative softwares. #b3d #blendergis

@spatialoccasio1 @swisstopo Thanks for the insight. That's crazy how you used the underside of a water surface to create the sky, very clever! I would never have considered that as an option but the result speaks for itself.
