Veteran journalist Bob Schieffer was born in Austin and raised in Fort Worth, where he graduated from high school. He went to TCU, got his degree, and then joined the Air Force for three years. After that, Bob got a job working as a reporter for the Fort Worth Star Telegram. It was the beginning of a meteoric career that saw ended up with him moderating Presidential debates In between, he was the host of "Face the Nation" for 20+ years, the host of the CBS evening news, interviewed every President from Nixon on. He's also won virtually every award in broadcast journalism, including eight Emmys, the Edward R. Murrow Award etc... And, through it all, Bob's inborn Texas friendliness shined through: I always liked him. Part of Bob's journey involved going to Vietnam in 1965 for the Fort Worth Star Telegram. His assignment was to interview Texans about their experiences. This Monday night, on Feb. 9, Bob will be talking about that at an event sponsored by the great folks at @spcouta . You can read about it at this link: x.com/spcouta I am thinking of going, though it is a 400 mile round trip for me. Maybe I'll spend a day or two in Cowtown afterward. Here's Bob on the right in Vietnam in a photo with a real "Apocalypse Now" feeling to it. I wonder what Bob thought when he saw that movie 15 years later. Anyway, if you're anywhere near UT-Arlington on Monday night, the opening of the exhibit would be pretty neat to attend.

Stanley Gunn was a native Texan who was killed in the Phillipines on October 29, 1944 while serving as a war correspondent for the Fort Worth Star Telegram. He had graduated from the University of Texas in Austin seven years before, then worked for the San Antonio Light. In 1943 he took a job working for Amon Carter at the Fort Worth Star Telegram. Stanley held the rank of ensign in the U.S. Naval Reserve, as he explained in an article from June 28, 1944: “As a war correspondent I am accredited to the army—not a part of it—but privileged to wear the uniform of an officer (with equivalent rank of captain, in case of capture by the enemy) and allowed to go with troops under the command of General MacArthur.” Stanley found no shortage of Texans during his time as a war correspondent. He found them everywhere and reported on their marriages to Australians, the way they picked up Australian slang, and even the way they made chili. Stanley wrote that the Texans were not difficult to spot on account of their "high spirits, their devil-may-care attitude, and their belligerent patriotism for their home state.” I should note that, like Felix Longoria, Stanley died within a few months of his arrival in the Pacific. On Oct. 25, 1944, he sustained severe injuries from a Japanese bomb that exploded next to his quarters. He died three days later, just weeks prior to his scheduled return home. Colleagues and friends buried Gunn in the U.S. Army cemetery in Tacloban, Leyte; later his remains were exhumed and reinterred in Austin, Texas. Amon G. Carter sent his condolences via telegram to Gunn's widow, Catherine Gunn, after his death, writing that “Stanley was a fine, upright, courageous, capable, good American, doing a grand job in keeping the mothers and wives at home advised of the doings of their loved ones in the Pacific. Stanley was 30 years old when he died. He left behind a wife and two children. He is buried in Austin's Memorial Park Cemetery on Hancock Drive.
