Many people still don’t know much about selective mutism, leading to misunderstandings and myths. But we can change that! Share this post to educate others and spark important conversations. 🌟 Together, we can build a more supportive community for kids with SM. 😊

@RogersHistory More parent blaming. I don’t think in nearly 20 yrs of working CYP with SEN I’ve heard of someone getting school transport funded due to being ‘lazy.’ The ignorance is breathtaking.

Astonished by the cash being spent on getting kids into school. One school spends £70k a year on transport to collect children from home, another school spent £30k on taxis to get pupils to the school gates. These were mainstream secondary schools. Broken record time - But can we talk about what's happened to parental responsibility in this country? What happened to walking 20 mins to get a bus for 45 mins then another walk for 20 mins to somewhere you desperately didn't want to go? (my teenage years).

‘Fighting every step is so hard' Katie, 17, is autistic and has barely been to school since she was 13. She joined @BBCNuala to discuss her experience as a child navigating England’s Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) system, and how it has impacted her.

Today is the first ever ARFID AWARENESS DAY - thanks to @ArfidUk for all their work. Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (aka ARFID) is an eating disorder which lacks awareness and understanding. There are currently no treatment guidelines for it which means that services/pathways are not commissioned for treating it. Too often people with ARFID often don’t receive the care they need and deserve. A core reason for this is the lack of research establishing effective treatments, though there is some evidence showing adapted treatments for anorexia and a variety of psychological interventions may be helpful. Today is a landmark occasion for ARFID. The more we shout that people with ARFID deserve better, the more people that know about ARFID, the more awareness that is raised and the more likely we are to be heard. #ARFIDAwarenessDay #ARFID

Re #autism interventions and use of social media. "well-evidence interventions are dismissed" What are these evidenced interventions? If it's referring to social skills training & attention building programmes, the evidence is weak. @RCSLT

@EmilioLees @RCSLT I felt uncomfortable reading this article. When are SaLTs as a professional group actually going to start listening to autistic people!

@EmilioLees The bit on screen time especially irritated me when I read it. So judgemental. My autistic 7 yr old has learnt to read using his iPad. As far as I’m concerned his listening is great, he just doesn’t listen if someone isn’t engaging enough 🤷‍♀️

Another article on listening intervention. Reference to developmental stages of attention & listening which is based on neuronormative stages of development. "Teacher was responsible for reinforcing listening rules". Results showed children learned what "good listening means".

When sensory issues are disruptive to a person's life, sensory desensitization can sound like something that might help. But reducing sensitivity isn’t really a thing you can do TO someone. At least, not without inducing a trauma response or two. #sensoryprocessing

Communication support is a desperately needed thing for so many autistic people and their families. Unfortunately, many places that claim they can offer it are not delivering in the well-rounded, neuro-affirming way they should.

Should children be diagnosed with a personality disorder? We don’t think so. It’s a label that can hide abuse, trauma and truth. That’s why we endorse this letter. Over 1,000 others do, too, including clinicians and organisations. Find out more here: openletter.earth/children-shoul…

In response to Joe Wicks saying #ADHD is caused by ultra-processed foods: Joe is a force for so much good but on this he's abjectly wrong. His point that a good diet can help almost everyone is right. But diet good, bad, or ugly won't make you have ADHD or make you not have ADHD.
