The authors of this recent study integrated three different metabolomics datasets; including those for #Malaria, leishmaniasis and #Zika virus infection, to determine metabolites which behave in the same way in different infectious diseases: plos.io/44YUy5Q

it’s not an early brake on parasite replication. it’s an emergency response that quickly re-organises the immune system to better co-ordinate host defence. great collaboration with the @ReeceLab

instead, we propose that systemic inflammation functions to switch bone marrow production in favour of myelopoiesis and mobilise the required effector cells to the spleen.

the innate immune response slows down parasite growth early in infection. this is a well-established paradigm in malaria but the in vivo evidence is surprisingly weak 👇 frontiersin.org/articles/10.33…
