It seems pretty undeniable that people in their 30s/40s today look way younger than people the same age did even 20 years ago. Why is this happening, is it just better cosmetic treatments? What are the second order social effects?

You're in this position because your prices are too low. You don't need to stack on more underpaid work. You need to raise your prices. Focus on getting in front of new fans. Have a clear and simple call to action on each post, ask people to leave a comment and emoji (pick one you like) if they're interested in you making a drawing for them. Recycle old art posts for newly acquired fans to see. Don't display your pricing publically. Create a "menu" of options you send to people who express interest that range from 15-30 minute drawings up to your fanciest options. Base pricing single figure no background. Any additional elements have an upgrade fee. Make sure you are making no less than $50/hour for each menu option. Get full payment up front. All these are lessons learned the hard way. Draw and tag people from big accounts to get more exposure when they retweet you.

I love how this conversation has blown up. And I love how offended people are at an artist charging a given rate. Even setting aside the bespoke aspect you're pointing out (well said by the way) if five people a week will buy at a given price, then it's appropriately priced. End of story.

A commission is custom made for you, and for you only. Do you realize how much a video game would cost if made from scratch, just for you specifically?

The labor exchange here is crazy tho. If someone makes $15 an hour than he is trading 6.7 hours of his life for an artists sketch that would take them 30 min to an hour to make. (I’m being generous with the time since a few artists I know can crank out 3 sketches in 30 minuets) That’s highway robbery. I hope the artist starves because they priced themselves out of the market

Love that you're charging a rate you can live on and that you're turning haters into publicity. Most people don't understand that A. Value is relative from person to person B. Your art is not a commodity. Nobody but you can make it and for someone who likes your work it's worth the price. And C. The people who pay more tend to be lovely to work with compared with the people who are cheap So let the hate roll off, and keep making art for the people who get it.
