Vishnu Som placates Marco Rubio Why is it that our veteran journalists of leading legacy media houses are unable or unwilling to ask tough questions to even visiting political dignitaries of all kinds, let alone the high priests of the authoritarian regime in our own country? Take the case of @VishnuNDTV of @ndtv. I watched his interview with @marcorubio , the US Secretary of State who is currently visiting India. Exactly as we find choreographed questions for our Prime Minister @narendramodi when servile journalists provide him a platform to hold forth on his facile views rather than pin him down to issues that would embarrass him, we watched the sorry spectacle of Vishnu Som seeking to placate rather than confront Secretary Rubio in a make-believe interview! Just sample this: on the crisis of West Asia, Rubio repeated the trope that Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz was a gross violation of the international order and all countries of the world must come together to oppose it! How I wish Som had asked the US Secretary of State: was it in conformity with international law that the US launched a surprise attack on February 28 killing top officials including the Supreme Leader of Iran? Wasn’t it gross violation of international order that the US forces, gangster-like, swooped down on the presidential palace of Venezuela at midnight and abducted president @NicolasMaduro and his wife the other day? Examples galore. But Som was apparently tongue-tied! Secretary Rubio’s emphatic assertion that Iran must not be allowed to develop or possess nuclear weapons should have prompted journalist Som to ask the inevitable question: why is it safe for West Asia that only Israel should have nuclear weapons but no other country? Why the Balance of Terror concept is a threat in the Middle East, but in no other part of the world? The hypocrisy of the political leaders can be exposed only when a journalist is true to his salt to speak truth to power; but when journalism as a profession is debased, when it has turned into a PR exercise for the powers-that-be, then even sober journalists like Som — not to speak of many loud-mouthed ones in the profession who wear their pro-establishment heart on their sleeve — appear as lapdogs of the State rather than its watchdogs!
