Yo. My name is Robert Ray Fields, but you can just call me Spooky. I like games like Dead Rising, SMT, Sonic, and Halo. Also, Persona 3 sucks ass, don’t @ me.

I like how in the flagship HD version, Kota’s tone sounds mocking and sardonic, almost like Starkiller coming to off him in Vader’s stead is like a huge practical joke. It suggests a man who is so confident in his mastery of the Force that he views Vader’s "apprentice" as a mere lackey. But in the SD version, he’s more insulted and bitter, like all the effort trying to draw Vader out of hiding was all for nothing if Vader won’t see him as an equal threat to himself and the Empire. By sending an unknown boy, Vader hasn't just sent a weak opponent; he has signaled that Kota is no longer worth his personal attention.

@spookysolhacker Hearing and seeing his drunkenness everytime you go to customise your lightsaber in the Rogue Shadow really hammers it home for me. It crops up often enough so you don't forget. But never too much it becomes overbearing.

@spookysolhacker I feel that I prefer the darker and more lost place Kota goes to in the SD version, as it makes his triumphant moment later on Corellia more impactful. We saw him at his absolute worst, lost in the bottle, and how Starkillers actions inspired him to be better by the end.

@gleemZGTAF And honestly speaking? I actually kinda prefer what we have now as a multimedia project, because it feels like hearing different versions of the same folk tale - having the user come to their own conclusion about what happens as well as the underlying subtext behind it

There were so many versions of TFU1’s story that all had their different interpretations of the core events, from the aforementioned HD and SD versions, to the DS game, to the lost iOS/Mobile version, and even the novelization by Sean Williams. I feel like a “director’s cut” that interprets every single version of the game would be a macroscopic effort by both current day Lucasarts (led by Dave Filoni no less) as well as Disney, which would also have them confront with probably the biggest entry in the Legends continuity that clashes with their view of what’s considered canon and whatnot - which I don’t see that happening in the current day.

@spookysolhacker I think PSP version is superior! So much content compared to the bigger brother consoles! All kinds of cheats, modes, collecables and stuff...cool game!

It really does highlight how it pushes the envelope on Kota’s rock bottom, with it leaning that heavily into his alcoholism fundamentally changes the flavor of that entire sequence. In the HD version, he is clearly intoxicated and broken, but once Starkiller rouses him, there is still a faint flicker of survival instinct that compels him to follow. The SD version, however, paints a much bleaker picture of a man entirely consumed by his vices. Kota isn't just physically impaired; he is actively resisting being saved. The alcohol is his shield against reality, and he prioritizes maintaining that numbness over escaping a very active warzone. I guess I should post the HD cutscene for comparison here.

@spookysolhacker I feel that Kota's alcoholism after this fight is more prevalent in the SD version In SD, instead of following you like on HD Bespin, he disappears for more drinks. And even takes one back to the Rogue Shadow He is also in the RS hub after this clearly drunk What do you think?

@Kingpinn02 @spookysolhacker I’ve always thought that a new Director’s Cut version that combined both stories would be awesome

@spookysolhacker I tried playing the PS2 version through an emulator. The PC version is only better in the physics aspect. Everything else from art direction and level design to writing and combat is better on PS2. Sadly, both versions are riddled with QTEs, which is an awful gameplay choice.

@spookysolhacker Can’t believe there’s two different versions of this game and both of them are great experiences. Of course the HD version plays amazingly but the SD version’s different tone of the story (and more levels) makes it just as good.

The One Who Reports For Duty
@spookysolhacker Don't forget, he doesn't know Starkiller is Vader's apprentice. He might suspect it, but he doesn't know for sure. All he knows for sure is that who was sent to fight him is someone who isn't Vader. I do love the differences though; Kota's voice actor did a great job.

@spookysolhacker Perhaps it's a bit of nostalgia (and, admittedly, a preference for the language), but in the Spanish version (I think only the HD version has dubbing), Kota goes from sarcasm and mockery to indignation and rage in a very natural and wonderful way.

@spookysolhacker The Wii version was the best version of the game. More cutscenes and dialogue, as well as 501st clones instead of stormtroopers in the intro

@spookysolhacker 👌🔥. The Force Unleashed, a great Star Wars game. And, mostly nostalgia.
