The first-generation E84 X1 was designed as a compact crossover, not as a performance platform. Fitting the N55 straight-six into it was therefore an unusual decision. The engine was originally developed for saloons and coupés, where weight distribution and rear-drive balance mattered more than packaging efficiency. In the X1, the straight-six changes the character entirely. It adds smoothness and torque depth that the platform does not strictly need. With a 0–60 time of around 5.6 seconds, it is genuinely quick even by later standards, comparable to flagship four-cylinder performance models of newer generations. This version exists because BMW still prioritised engine quality over segmentation logic.
