@iplaygames_64 @Victor_Lucas How is this spun? Global gaming numbers from last 6 years. Physical has reduced by half down to under 7% of total globe dollars in gaming. And yes there are fewer physical copies available because fewer people preorder physical.

Hey video game analysts… We need to see global numbers on physical games. We need to see data on consumers not being able to find sold out games in stores and deciding that digital is the only way to play something new. We need to see a comparative analysis across different consoles and different generations. We need to see data on whether companies have been printing less and less physical media in an effort to speed up this change to digital. We need to see pricing data for physical games and digital games over a multi-year period. We need to see data on the collector/resale/cultural value of physical vs digital media over time. We need to see data on the public awareness for games that physical retail provides. We need to see data on holiday gift shopping for new physical media. We need to see data on the losses to businesses, collectors, conventions, the game playing audience and the public discourse around games that the end of physical games will create. And then if the consensus is that physical games are over, we should see a plan that allows players to truly own (back up, gift, share, sell and play forever) the digital games they buy.

@tavernofterrors If people don’t preorder most companies will assume that it will be bought digital. They are not going to print millions of disc if 50K people preorder. They will print the preorders and then some.

@TheNCSmaster A lot of them are omitting data, presenting partial data, and/or framing in certain area (not all sales). Basically trying to dumb it down as much as possible.

It’s very off putting seeing the amount of gaming news sites publishing headlines that are trying to drive people into accepting the death of physical games Like a lot of recent articles give off the vibe of “shut up and accept it’s over”

Such a dumb report trying to spin a narrative once again 007, RE9, Pragmata, LEGO Batman, Saros are the only big releases I can think of and "only" 7 of them sold more than 100k in US ONLY and even then they're not saying how many physical sales they had, just "more than 100k"

@Aizmov While context on how much the games did sell should be included the fact that they have to go down to a low enough number of 100K just to get to 7 games should also be telling.

Just to put a context to this stupid narrative; a game that sold 1.8M copies in physical (i.e. Resident Evil Requiem) is considered “more than 100K” Media has been manipulating the truth like this for years to change public opinion, and unfortunately, they still succeed!

@KindredBlade I’m not digital only or necessarily prefer digital, but I’m just a realist and see numbers and don’t see any chance of a reversal. Best bet and what I wish would happen is for Sony to work with a 3rd party and authorize them to print their disc.

I never thought a huge portion of gamers would actively fight on Sony's behalf. Even if you prefer digital games, why are you against those who are demanding physical discs? It's not like we're asking for digital games to be removed. If you don't want to fight with us, then at least don't fight against us.

@Totalpackage2k @Pirat_Nation 2025 total revenue of the gaming industry was $90 billion. Total revenue from physical games was $6 billion. That is just 7%. Sorry but physical buyers are not the whales. They cut out all physical and it doubles the revenue. They just have to keep 50% of users to break even.

@Pirat_Nation I dont see the point of a console without physical content. As a physical collector I double dipped frequently. The physical buyers are the whales. The people that dont buy physical maybe buy 2 games a years and mainly play roblox & fortnite. Thats not who you want as a customer

Former Valve writer Chet Faliszek says there’s no conspiracy behind PlayStation’s move away from physical games. In his view, the industry is simply following what most players have already chosen: buying games digitally. Faliszek argued that consumers ultimately decide how companies operate. “You, the consumer, have made your choice, and the choice is for digital.” He also pointed out that while many people online are upset about Sony ending physical, sales data has shown for years that digital purchases have massively overtaken physical copies. Some analysts are at it again, claiming that only 100,000 physical copies of seven different games sold in the entire United States. Let me repeat this loud and clear: PHYSICAL COPIES STILL SELL. The numbers don't lie physical media is holding strong in 2026. This isn't some dying niche; it's a proven, resilient market that refuses to disappear. Yet every time the data shows physical demand is alive and well, we get another wave of dismissive headlines trying to downplay it. Keep pushing back, everyone. Don’t let up. This feels like classic FUD (fear, uncertainty, doubt) being pushed hard and it’s no coincidence that Sony and the all-digital crowd seem the most desperate to bury the conversation. They’re scared because physical sales still matter, and gamers aren’t forgetting it. Physical isn’t dead. It’s not even close.

@markemark108 @longislandviper Because people aren’t preordering. Why gaming stores push for preorders is because it gives them an indication on what demand could be. If you don’t preorder it looks like there isn’t a demand. A retail store isn’t going to sit on dozens of copies that may never sell.

@longislandviper Part of the issue is that you can't find physical copies. I'll have to search 4 or 5 stores to find a game sometimes. I think a small part of this is that. You can't buy what you can't find.

This is an astonishing statistic. Me calling the physical userbase on PS5 "vanishingly small" may actually be underselling it. (Mat clarified this is for all games from all pubs on PS.) I'm wishing my physical brethren the very best in their fight, but it ain't looking good.
The Gaming Ledger@TheGamingLedger

The data is showing the opposite of the Physical media movement. Hard for a business to justify something when consumers have spoken with their wallet.

@Temky1 @longislandviper Well if we looking at pointless dated numbers why stop there? Let’s look at how many people bought a PS2. That really would be the best statistic for looking at how gaming is in 2026.

@DimitriThree @longislandviper So every time a small minority of consumers voice an opinion they have to pivot their business plans? How realistic do you really think that is? Physical game buyers are a small minority of games sales now.

@EVRYTHNGFATIGUE @mbl666uk @longislandviper The demand is a preorder. If you didn’t preorder they have no clue what the physical demand is going to be. It’s not some conspiracy it’s just they make less physical because less people are preordering physical.

@mbl666uk @longislandviper Yeah, they're intentionally not meeting demand. Thousands of people are reporting the same issue, so it's statistically significant. Going forward, I'm going to be *militant* about getting only getting physicals no matter how hard they make it lol.

@longislandviper As soon as they announced they’re killing physical games- ive been buying my physical games elsewhere. So im sure people are doing that. I would be more concerned with the time period before the announcement. Idk why you’d continue to buy physically on a dead physical platform.

@Snowmoo5523 @GamesRadar As much as people want to create their own reality in regards to physical games the numbers don’t lie. When you become the minority of anything you lose a lot of power. It sucks but that’s the reality.

I just notice how many gamers are actually socialist. They have this we shouldn't have to pay this much and Sony should be forced to stop doing what they are doing. Well baby boy your in a capitalist system where there is NO SUCH thing as greed. Just Markets.

@Emyrus17 @CraigHarris456 They are in a market place where PC gaming sales dominate over console sales. They have to out compete other ecosystems for your dollars. They don’t hold a gaming monopoly. 99% of games on their console can be found elsewhere and they also get thousands less games per year as PC

I'm a little nervous to post this, because this is such a firestorm, but I believe it's worth considering: Here's why purchasing physical discs from Sony right now won't change their minds, and why it might even further drive them toward digital: 1. Sony has always known the market for physical games. They can lie and deflect, but we've seen the leaks, and we know physical is often equal to, and sometimes even greater than, digital. Buying physical did not convince them to keep physical in the first place. It won't convince them now. 2. The current leadership of Sony doesn't view a physical sale as a positive. They view it as lost potential revenue. I know this has been broken down a lot, but in quick summary: Sony makes around 15% of each physical game sale. They make 30% of digital. (100% for 1st party games, naturally.) Sony would much rather lose a percentage of physical sales and force everyone into digital, because the margins are so much better. If 50% of players buy a game physically, current Sony leadership sees only how much they COULD have made if those purchases had been digital. They believe that by eliminating physical, you all, or at least enough of you, will switch to digital to make this worth the effort. I'm not necessarily calling for a boycott. I think people should buy what and how they choose. For me, I'm so personally disgusted with the company that I don't want to give them anymore of my money. I don't look down on you if you feel differently. But the only way Sony could potentially ever be convinced they're making a mistake is if their total revenue tanks, tanking their stock price in turn. Otherwise, January 2028 is the definite end of physical PlayStation games.
