The Methodist Church receives with deep sadness the news of the death of His Holiness Pope Francis, and gives thanks for his life and Christian witness.
We pray that he may rest in peace and rise in glory.

There have been lots of questions about Paula Vennells' actions and motivations.
I've spent some looking at the evidence she gave to parliamentary inquiries in both 2015 and 2020.

As a Jew, I have become increasingly worried that the charge of antisemitism is being levelled to silence legitimate and important debate. Antisemitism is on the rise, but there is also a rise in the unscrupulous use of the term to silence reasonable questions about the Israeli government’s actions in Gaza. This article in the Harvard Crimson by Jewish community leader Bernie Steinberg warns of incipient McCarthyism. It is worth reading, whichever side of the debate you are on thecrimson.com/article/2023/1…

@ScholarPriest @mthr_jo I challenge the assumption here about the ordering of cause and effect: the MWB does reflect an evolution of Methodist ethos that has an ecumenical spirit, and of which a closer leaning towards the CofE was a natural expression—but the latter didn’t specifically drive the former.

Any notion that this is a “Church of England matter” and that the ecumenically appropriate thing is for us to “stay out of it” is bogus: it is precisely because of our sororal relationship that this is all our concern.

@FrJarelRB I’ve always thought—at least, in the Church of England—that the Eighth Sacrament is the one most recently administered, at Westminster Abbey, on 2 June 1953 😉
