Reader in Politics, UCL. But these are my own views, tweeting in personal capacity. Retweeting not an endorsement. More Politics things in the butterfly place.

That AI isn't yet "good enough" to mark students' essays ought to be beside the point. Outsourcing such tasks to AI is fundamentally incompatible with the intellectual engagement between student and professor that should be central to higher education. /1 cam.ac.uk/stories/ai-uni…

The prospect of AI-generated student work that is, in turn, evaluated by AI is a dystopian prospect and represents an existential threat to the sector. Universities should have the courage to recognise this and design AI policies accordingly, however unfashionable that seems. 3/3

Academic writing isn't about producing "content". It's about thinking: grappling with ideas, refining arguments. Students should be encouraged to do that now more than ever. They are entitled, in return, to genuine intellectual encounter with a professor who marks their work. /2

The more I read about this stuff, the more I'm convinced AI is designed to not only steal academics' intellectual property, but also destroy and delegitimise higher education all together.

Fake academic journals are publishing AI-generated papers under real professors’ names We identified a network of AI-created journals that have published over 100 fake papers, using real professors' names among the AI slop nbcnews.com/tech/internet/…

I try to stay as professional as possible on here, but the recent spate of tweets I've seen bemoaning that 'things just haven't been the same since 2020' or similar and then utterly ignoring the ongoing impact of SARS-CoV-2 infuriates me. Denial and ignorance in equal measure.

It’s a tragedy that we are allowing our universities and research capacity to wither due to lack of funding and a determined effort to deter international students. Good jobs are being lost. Once lost, capacity will be hard to rebuild. To what benefit? ft.com/content/ded7df…

Pope Leo is right. We cannot allow a cabal of oligarchs to use AI to enrich themselves through war and exploitation. Society has to be in charge. theguardian.com/world/2026/may…

it does make me feel pretty bad that the literal actual catholic pope is not only considerably more informed about AI, what it actually is, its costs and externalities but also much more serious about combating regulating and limiting it than virtually every american politician

Before UK universities expanded their property portfolios, many international staff & students raised concerns about how international students were too central to the funding model & how untenable it was w/in the hostile environment. We did not have much solidarity with others…

@bingle_colin . Up to 24 English institutions are at risk of insolvency in the near term, with nearly half operating at a deficit and widespread job cuts already underway.

Using AI to write essays doesn't help students. It makes them less capable. You can't help *whatever marginalized student population you're pretending to care about* by lowering the standards you should be helping your students to meet. That is actually harmful to them!
Wokecrates@GhostOfSocrates

If you think stopping people from using AI to write essays is more important than preventing harm against neurodivergent and students who are english language learners then you've lost the plot. Once again white people would prefer to be cops than community members.

The Prime Minister’s salary will be reduced to less than half of its current level. The salaries of ministers, members of parliament, and mayors will also be significantly reduced. What I expect: humanity, moderation, and humility.
