“Is there any scenario or situation where someone could produce a droplet without also generating significant amounts of aerosols?” Professor Clive Beggs - IPC Expert: “No”

Seems a common misconception that if far field transmission isn't a major factor then the transmission mode is not airborne. Inhalation of aerosols at close range is still airborne transmission - just near field rather than far field. This is important to understand. 1/🧵

@kidneycareuk Nurse of 44 years, and co-leader of an infectious disease study group comprised of 100s of scientists. Your astoundingly ignorant recommendation to not use masks is frankly at the level of criminal negligence. Meningitis is an airborne pathogen. N95 masks save lives. Fix it, NOW.

The report concluded that: “In future, guidance should assume that ALL plausible routes of transmission are possible until sufficient evidence proves otherwise.” There are no excuses anymore. The government MUST NOT make the same mistakes again. We MUST learn from the past.

The thing for me about AI is that as a “doing school” thing, its use by students definitely situates itself within de Certeau’s concept of a “tactic.” But that taking up of a societial invitation to use all the AI all the time is not a tactic at all. It’s just hegemony.

People don’t use genAI “because they are stupid.” They largely use it because of power relations, promises, threats, and requirements. And because the work they are being asked to do holds no value for them. But that’s a form of requirement, so what I said previously.

Hey @sanofi, you're providing 600k nuvaxovid doses to NHS England this year. Can you provide some to private pharmacists too? Please? Pretty please. I'll have a shout round to get plenty of takers.

what if i told you that in 2026 we have the tools and technology to basically ELIMINATE every respiratory pathogen but we don’t use them because we’re too scared to acknowledge how their modes of transmission will deeply affect our way of living?

I'm curious - any other LongHauler advocates like myself who do NOT have LongCovid? (But, my advocacy is born out of self-interest/survival, because I recognize I am advocating also for a possible future me who could have LongCovid.)

The Covid Inquiry Module 3 report published this week made it clear that it is no longer appropriate to rely on the outdated dichotomy between aerosols & droplets. Where there is droplet transmission, there is also a high probability of aerosol transmission.

During the Covid inquiry, one of the independent expert witnesses was asked: “Is there any scenario or situation where someone could produce a droplet without ALSO generating significant amounts of aerosols?” Prof Beggs (expert in infectious disease transmission) replied: “NO”
