Harbors radical views...objectionable for several other reasons beyond the fact that they are fringe unreliable beliefs

@jameshawes2 plausible, but not necessarily - suppose the huge entity lacked some essential commodities (e.g. rare earths). But war is about death and destruction - we will all be losers

@Ant1Duval @Verfassungsblog Very good article- the point about the rights of players is key- this is not really about the top stars but the 100,000 or so professionals who earn little and have little choice but to do as they’re told. The rest of us cherish freedom of movement, now they can too.

@JordanAckerMI @silkiestmaria @hdichter It's not clear. He was born in the city, but his parents moved to Chicago soon after. He had a long relationship with Fred Matthaei Sr which had its ups and downs - underneath it all I think he thought Detroit was just too industrial and not sophisticated enough

@JordanAckerMI @silkiestmaria @hdichter There has been a lot written about this. In a nutshell, in 1945 everyone remembered that they were against Hitler, but when he was in power this was not so apparent. Only the Republican government of Spain and a few individual athletes boycotted.

@silkiestmaria @sszy @hdichter I'm curious about that decision to not boycott '36. In retrospect, it was a clear victory for the US (in collective memory) but what's the best reading about that decision?

@sross52055 This the 2023 Forbes data - with only 17 soccer clubs listed I created an extrapolation for 18-32 . The ratio is lower for the top soccer clubs, but also falls much faster - the 30th biggest soccer club is worth far less per $ of revenue that the 30th major league franchise.

@lovefutebol You're right, but of the five polls cited in that paper, the largest lead was in the poll that was before the game, and the one poll where the tories led was mostly conducted after the game.

@sszy Labour didn't lead in all the polls in 1970 (one gave the Tories a slight lead), and two if I remember correctly were within the margin of error. The research as indicated it would be tight. academic.oup.com/poq/article-ab…

#GeneralElection Why July 4? It's the Euros! Day before QF and England will likely be in a good mood - good for incumbents. Think 1970- election on 18 June, Labour leads in all polls, then England lose 3-2 in WC QF on 14 June - Tories win election.

@sszy @AlexPhillips8 @ChrisLepetit @Ant1Duval Your 2015 paper is the one citing, Stefan. I also know of another paper by Hoey, et al in 2020 which also concluded that the transfer system redistributes very little revenue from large clubs to small clubs.

I had a glance at the full text of the Opinion of AG Szpunar in the #Diarra case and it's (much) more interesting than the press release. If endorsed by the #CJEU, it will profoundly reshape the operation of the #FIFA #RSTP. Here is why 👇👇👇 #Sportslaw

The press release on the Opinion of AG @maciejszpunar in the Diarra case (C-650/22) is out! The case has potentially important implications for the operation of the international #TransferSystem & the rights of players in this context. 👇👇👇 #Sportslaw #FIFALaw #RSTP

@AlexPhillips8 @ChrisLepetit @Ant1Duval …. If anything evidence (one study by @sszy) shows that a significant chunk of transfer fees (72%) spent by PL clubs to other English clubs stayed within the PL. This notion that the transfer system is an effective revenue redistribution mechanism is not borne out by evidence.

@Val_Mueller_ASU one thing I found was that it was important to have a briefing session about expectations before meeting foreign students - so many little things are different, there is danger of confusion. And also, sadly, quite a bit of prejudice.

@Val_Mueller_ASU I co-taught with professors in Germany and Japan using skype ( long time ago!). My big takeaways: 1. timezones are problem 2. different semester schemes are a problem 3. however international you may be, the students on both sides can be very parochial That said, I loved it!
