Make American History Great Again
Imagine being one of the top historians of the War for Independence and writing this downer for the 250th. Some historians in America just love being negative about our country, don't they.

In 1998, Maclean's got an expert panel to come up with a list of history's "Most Important Canadians" based on "character, enduring achievement, influence, renown, and contribution to Canada and the world." I doubt your average Canadian has any idea who these people are.

@JosephRardin @josiahwatson99 I don't think this can be proved for every necessary critical period. If Randolph Jefferson was on site for months at a time each time, why did TJ's grandchildren suggest their cousins as possibly the father of Sally Hemmings's children, and never Randolph?

@josiahwatson99 @JosephRardin Maybe--I have wondered about Randolph Jefferson. But how much do we know about his character? Isn't it just one letter that says he played his violin in the slave quarter? And Sally Hemmings apparently bore children only when TJ had been at Monticello. Was RJ there so often?

@stanbrown32 @JosephRardin I still don't really believe in Thomas Jefferson and the Hemingses' relationship. I think Randolph Jefferson is a more plausible candidate, for it seems to fit his character more.

@ChHouseBooks I’m not sure if there are that many examples of the Simpsons drinking from deeper waters. A lot of early seasons jokes are just parodies of movies that came out a few years earlier. Like the Shinning parody is fun, but that would be like doing a parody of the Hunger Games today.

The best pop culture was always downstream of high culture. Meyer, George Lucas, and the original writers of The Simpsons drank from deeper waters. Now, pop culture writers are exclusively consumers of pop culture and the water has become much thinner.
Val@VK_HM

When Nicholas Meyer was hired to do the second Star Trek movie he only vaguely knew Trek as ‘the one with that guy with the ears.’ He did watch the show but made the movie inspired by things he loved, like Horatio Hornblower. And the result was, well, The Wrath of Khan

@josiahwatson99 @JosephRardin That book was published in 1998, a year before the publication of the DNA evidence collected from Jefferson and Hemmings descendants. That evidence forced many historians to revise their judgment of the Hemmings claims.

@JosephRardin @stanbrown32 In his appendix of "American Spinx," if memory serves me correctly, he rendered the relationship implausible. Where did he say otherwise?

@JosephRardin There is indeed something wrong with being a cheerleader for your own nation--that is the work of a propagandist, not a historian. Historians are supposed to present the past as it really was (despite inevitable biases--should work against their biased). Can't ignore evidence

@stanbrown32 There is nothing wrong with being a cheerleader for your own nation as a historian. Joseph J. Ellis had no problem in being speculative when he perpetrated the "Thomas Jefferson had children from Sally Hemings" story.

Just one day after ending "The Late Show" on CBS, Stephen Colbert returned to TV — to host a public access show with rocker Jack White in Monroe, Michigan. Appearances by Jeff Daniels, Eminem and Steve Buscemi.

I said on @MSNOW just now: What *is* the Trump slush fund? It's not an appropriation: Congress did not vote. It's not a settlement: There was no valid litigation because (as the judge said) Trump was suing himself. On what basis is this money leaving the Treasury?
