Much-needed consumer protection to ban the 5090D V2. The original 5090D had a firmware lock on AI compute, but for gaming it was identical to the 5090. However, the V2 version cuts memory bandwidth from 512 to 384 bit, and RAM from 32GB to 24GB. All while costing the same.

China has banned Nvidia’s RTX 5090D V2 graphics card and added it to the list of banned imports. The ban came while Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang was in Beijing with the U.S. delegation for high-level meetings. The RTX 5090D V2 is a special China-only version that Nvidia released in August 2025 with 24 GB of memory. It was built to follow strict U.S. export rules. China is pushing hard for self-reliance in computer chips. Even though the card was modified to meet U.S. limits, the country now wants companies to buy homegrown options like Huawei’s Ascend chips instead. Nvidia sales were already low in China, with this ban, they will be even lower.

Wang Yi is very down to earth. During a visit to NZ a number of years back, it was my job to greet him at the airport and escort him to meet our foreign minister in central Auckland. He said he had not liked the look of the airline food, was hungry, and would like to stop for a hamburger (he was quite specific) on the way to town if there was somewhere handy. So we stopped at the Carl’s Jr. that used to be near the airport and Wang Yi and members of his delegation and I all enjoyed a burger before proceeding into town to meet the minister.
