The end of your story is misleading when the economist says, "ate shit for nothing".
GDP refers to "production" or in a more practical sense, "usefulness". However, economic units, when driven to their core, are generally measured in "units of happiness" as happiness is generally the ultimate goal of humans. Therefore, the terms production and happiness are interchangeable under that adopted approach.
In the economist example, while no literal production of goods occured and the benefit of watching someone eat shit to most would sound useless, the economists each offered the other $100 to eat shit. Therefore, it is implied that they each expected to derive some sort of benefit from watching the other eat shit (laughter, etc.), or "happiness".
Therefore, they did not eat shit for nothing and derived some form of "production" or "happiness" through their exchange (unless they did not actually derive any happiness from watching the other perform).
Make sense?
English

Actually, obligatory:
Two economists are walking in a forest when they come across a pile of shit.
The first economist says to the other “I’ll pay you $100 to eat that pile of shit.”
The second economist takes the $100 and eats the pile of shit.
They continue walking until they come across a second pile of shit.
The second economist turns to the first and says “I’ll pay you $100 to eat that pile of shit.”
The first economist takes the $100 and eats a pile of shit.
Walking a little more, the first economist looks at the second and says, "You know, I gave you $100 to eat shit, then you gave me back the same $100 to eat shit. I can't help but feel like we both just ate shit for nothing."
"That's not true", responded the second economist. "We increased the GDP by $200!"

Every dollar spent on food stamps creates $1.50 in economic activity. Only the economically illiterate want to cut food stamps.

English

@Pysanczyn why are you selling tickets on the cheap somewhere 150 clicks away from your barn

English

@just_fedup Just to clarify, where does freedom of speech end for you?

@Crepitis1 @jpegsupreme @PursueTruth92 I’ll ask you the same questions.. How do you know CK shooter was politically motivated?… why couldn’t they have mental health issues too?… what information about the shooter, that hasn’t even been identified yet, do you have?… this is a tragedy, stop this biases nonsense
English

@jpegsupreme @PursueTruth92 How do they know it was politically motivated? It seems more likely the shooter had mental health issues. They has been VERY little information on this...

I’ve always considered myself a moderate person. I’ve been proudly unaffiliated since age 18. But I’ve seen too many cities destroyed and too many innocent Americans killed by the radical policies and ideology of the Democrat Party.
Today I’m registering as a Republican.

@statsdman @realnathanxm @JJ_McCullough Trudeau went from golden boy to unperson with no in-between.
One minute he’s the pride of the party, next it’s ‘Justin who?’
they just ctrl+z’d their messiah
English

@FergusCircus @realnathanxm @JJ_McCullough You actually think he charged tax payers $2M for socks? Either way, time to move on, Trudeau isn’t PM. Join us in reality.
English

@KatKanada_TM So now you’re finding out that the carbon tax wasn’t really the reason gas prices are high - maybe we should’ve channelled that energy to address the root cause?
English

@FergusCircus @realnathanxm @JJ_McCullough Only until tax payers fund a $2M by-election to gift PP a safe seat
English

@realnathanxm @JJ_McCullough If you heard a little more from the other sides of the aisle you would know that Andrew Scheer is the current leader of the conservative party.
