@steady_drumbeat

Would rather be obvious and right than esoteric and stupid. Liberal with Chinese characteristics.

Skipping the obvious, boring commentary (prison abolition bad), what I find interesting is that, in reinventing a justice system from scratch, these people have emphasized the communal, ritual, symbolic aspects of a trial. Social consensus and communal implication in punishment, public expiation of sin through ritual humiliation of the criminal -- are deep human needs. Could it be the case that widespread dissatisfaction with the justice system -- designed (for good reason!) to be as impartial as possible -- is downstream of the sense that it denies us the sensation of communal involvement in punishment, and therefore denies us communal catharsis in the aftermath of sin?
Christianity On The Spectrum@ChristianityOn

Remembering reading a text on prison abolition, which had a discussion on something that they called an "empathy ceremony" and it was literally just a ritualistic public execution by drowning.

@steady_drumbeat Another time, I saw a dude on a bicycle dragging his two toddler sons on a flimsy aluminum trailer shrouded in vinyl, all wearing cloth masks without helmets. MINDLESS!!!

I'm fine with people objecting to it. People have strongly held cultural preferences which aren't legible, and that's fine. But I think it's very weird for people to pretend they got traumatized by wearing a mask for a year during a pandemic. We all had to do crazy stuff to get through COVID, get over it!

@DavidFoust86 @steady_drumbeat Yeah I had assumed they would become common on public transport and crowded spaces in the West after pandemic like it always had been in East Asia. But it all became so political 🤷‍♀️

@RAMSibelius1 @steady_drumbeat It was simple: government shares information about how it spreads and what you can do to prevent spread but institutes no mandates and no restrictions. An informed public with complete freedom is the answer always.

Peter Beinart
Peter Beinart@PeterBeinart·
There are a thousand reasons that Trump's authoritarianism has been so difficult to defeat. But one of them is this: In the 20th century, American Jewry's most powerful institutions generally defended American democracy. They no longer do. Today, they would prefer an authoritarian America that supports Israel to a democratic America that condemns it.
Jewish Currents@JewishCurrents

"The willingness of today’s establishment Jewish groups to aid and abet a racist aspiring dictator as long as he arms Israel and suppresses criticism of it in the US isn’t only immoral. It’s also profoundly foolish," writes @PeterBeinart. jewishcurrents.org/the-shame-of-t…

Hasan Piker attempts to convince Norm Finkelstein that Israel tying itself to Judaism makes it harder to combat anti-Semitism Norm Finkelstein argues back that anti-Semitism is defined as an "irrational" hatred of Jews, but that the resentment is rational. Hasan argues that no people are monolithic, and the scapegoating of Jews is a common tactic. That people understand that when Tucker Carlson says America has "demographic concerns", that is white supremacy. He says that if Jews were monolithic there would not be such a generational divide on Zionism and billions spent to maintain its indoctrination. Finkelstein says he would not tell someone who has experienced the Holocaust that they should not hate Germans. And that he would not argue with a Palestinian who feels the same way about Jews. Norm cites that 95% of Israeli citizens agree with the force used against Gaza, and that its citizen army that represents its population carried out mass starvation as a method of war. Hasan Piker says he agrees with the facts, but he has a more optimistic perspective in terms of changing people's minds on conflating Judaism with Zionism.

@mattbossong I was skeptical of many of these policies, but I agree that they were all defensible. COVID was a legitimate emergency! We should exhibit grace for our elected officials and public health appointees!

The controversial precautions we took during COVID — i.e. lockdowns, mask mandates and vax requirments — I think are pretty defensible. It was a pandemic unlike anything anyone alive had ever seen.
