I’ve spent a significant chunk of time this summer traveling, spending more and more time out in nature, and doing digital detoxes of various lengths and protocols. I’ve spent about three weeks aggregate in the last 3 - 4 months on near zero screen time. Every time I return to internet/social media it is abundantly obvious our brains are not designed for this level of information processing. Social media is forced sensory and information overload, cheap dopamine hits and extremely shallow retention of 20 pieces of information in 2 minutes. Our brains are wired for depth and repetition not breadth and instant gratification. Our brains neuroplasticity can be rewired quite easily for better or for worse. When dopamine overload is prioritized over long form memory and focus, the brain rewires pathways to favor the dopamine overload and diminishes the pathways for focus and retention. You can literally accelerate atrophy in the hippocampus with chronic online use. You can also reverse these effects with intentional detoxes. Really concerning thinking about third order effects of kids these days growing up with their faces glued to ipads. Each generation grows up spending less and less time outside, learning social cues, body language, and developing basic human interaction skills. Fully believe there is a non-insignificant portion of the world that is currently drifting through life in isolation, chronically online , more in tune with a numbing digital version of themselves than their true authentic self. I would challenge anyone to digital detox, not just away from screens but intentionally socializing, reading, writing, brain puzzles (in books not apps), building something with your hands etc. You will notice the difference. I promise you, you will be absolutely shocked how much brain power we give away to online consumption.
