Google baut in Minnesota auf Pine Island, ein neues KI-Rechenzentrum. Da AKWs bekanntlich zu spät kommen, setzt Google auf EE und Batterien zur Stromversorgung. Ja, auch die USA haben nicht genug Strom, um die Rechenzentren zu betreiben. Die Betreiber müssen stets selbst für die Stromversorgung aufkommen. Meist sind das Gaskraftwerke. Jetzt kommt der Hammer, neben der 1,4GW Windkraft und 0,2GW PV Installation, wird eine 30GWh Batterie aufgebaut, die 100 Stunden lang 300MW liefern kann! Also eine 4-tägige Dunkelflaute überbrücken kann. So große Batterien baut man mit billigen Eisen-Luftspeicher, bei denen es keinerlei Materialrestriktionen gibt. Die Batterie besteht aus Eisen, Luft, etwas Kohlenstoff und wässriges Elektrolyt und ist nicht brennbar. In Prinzip wird durch Rosten von Eisen, Strom erzeugt und durch Laden wird entrostet. Die Zyklenfestigkeit gibt Form Energy mit 10.000 Zyklen oder 30 Jahren Lebensdauer an. Dieser Batterietyp kann quasi unendlich skaliert werden und hat das Potential die Energiewende weltweit zu revolutionieren. Es gibt aber noch einige Dinge zu verbessern, wie die Selbstentladungsrate und den Wirkungsgrad. Der Netzbetreiber Xcel Energy betreibt und errichtet die Anlage und Google zahlt. Die Batterie kommt von Form Energy.

Wann geht das eigentlich in die Köpfe von allen da draußen rein? Ein Elektroauto ist wesentlich weniger komplex und ein Verbrenner hat eine viel viel komplexere Lieferkette (die auch bezahlt werden will). Verbrenner werden so unfassbar teuer werden, das geht schneller als gedacht. Dieser verzweifelte Versuch das alles zu retten ist erbärmlich und kurzsichtig. Die Kostenstrukturen waren 2018-2020 auf einem Record Low und die Entwicklungen werden noch krass werden. Mark my words. Skalierung regelt.
