Selling crude oil at low prices and buying back gasoline and diesel at high prices, while neglecting to develop its own refining industry, Canada lags far behind South Korea in oil refining capacity. What long-term industrial development plans and economic policies do Canadian politicians have to increase gasoline and diesel supply and reduce fuel costs for Canadians to match US gas station prices? How can Canada, as a major oil-producing country, demonstrate its benefits to its people? Isn't low gasoline and diesel price in the national interest of Canadians? Friendship in selling oil at low prices does not necessarily benefit the Canadian people.

Canada cannot remain structurally dependent on a single export market while claiming economic sovereignty. Building pipelines to both coasts is not just an infrastructure decision—it is a strategic necessity. Without independent industrial policy, domestic refining capacity, and long-term planning, Canada risks remaining a raw resource supplier rather than a fully developed energy power. Outsourcing critical infrastructure—from ferries to submarines—further reflects a gap in national capability. This is not sustainable for a G7 country. A truly sovereign Canada should aim for balanced trade, diversified markets, and the capacity to produce, refine, and defend its own interests—on its own terms.

Canada shipped $7 billion worth of oil and gas to Texas in 2024 alone. This essential partnership gets Canadian energy to global markets, creates paycheques on both sides of the border, and helps fuel our friends. I met with President Todd Staples and Director Matt Patterson of the @TXOGA to grow that relationship, so we can build strength at home for unbreakable leverage abroad.
