Almost 5 decades after the first White Revolution, 5 co-founders are using IoT and cloud technologies to usher in White Revolution 2.0 by increasing farmer incomes, improving farm productivity, and tracking milk quality from farm to fridge. This is the story of @stellapps, a Blume Fund II company, which started over a decade back in the farmland of a family friend. Ranjith Mukundan, Ravishankar Shiroor, Praveen Nale, Ramakrishna Adukuri, and Venkatesh Seshasayee started Stellapps in 2011 as an IoT app store. But they soon realized that they'd need to go deep into a vertical to make the unit economics work. Serendipity struck as one of their friends had started a dairy farm on the outskirts of Bangalore and wanted to remotely monitor the farm and cows. The founders rolled up their sleeves and spent many nights at the farm to immerse themselves into the daily routine of the farm and cattle. As Ranjith said when we spoke to him, "We found it very interesting and a very apt use case for IoT. From an IoT perspective, a cow and a bus are the same, just the parameters to monitor change." Realizing that this is an untapped sector, the founders decided to drop all the other sectors and double down on building tech for cattle and farms. Today Stellapps touches the lives of more than 3.5M farmers daily, and its tech is used to monitor over 14M litres of milk every day. It is perhaps one of the only companies in India to have digitized a complex supply chain in difficult terrains by using IoT. We sat down with Ranjith and uncovered the backstory of Stellapps from a farm in the wilderness to a company tracking USD 80M topline, how they are building not just tech but an ecosystem of value-added services for farmers and dairy operators, and the road to a future IPO.
