The world needs to know science, but few scientists get opportunities to learn how to share their science with our world. @ScienceHaven is helping to improve science in higher education by holding top institutions accountable for producing education-centered scientists.

I really believe that all STEM majors should be required to take a science writing class as well as an ethics class. What is the point of science if you can't communicate about it to the public or can't ethically do it?

@granthamcsf @WeenaMeena That is a fantastic model, and it's awesome that you are providing this resource to your scientific community! Way to go!

@ScienceHaven Something that's worked well for us and our PhDs is to have a dedicated Comms Officer @WeenaMeena. Alongside this we provide training in all types of communication. It means we amplify the voices of our researchers, but they don't always have to be the ones creating content.

Our scientists are spending over 10 years receiving training on how to conduct scientific research but 0 hours spent in how to communicate the important science learned to non-scientific audiences or those with different worldviews. We absolutely must change this.

@ravenscimaven BA in physics + MS in medical physics + PhD in medical physics = 11 years in higher education and 0 time formally devoted to this 😩

@ScienceHaven I agree, but hasten to add: this communication is not a one-way street. Scientists imparting their wisdom on the public is not the right model. There are ethical and political dimensions to the common good that go way beyond our expertise.

In a time where climate change is still being debated by our top national officials, we absolutely cannot afford to continue producing scientists who are studying our climate but don't know how to communicate their science. Absolutely unacceptable. This must change. #sciencehaven

@ravenscimaven My BSc and MSc in Atmospheric science did not include a formal education in arguing about climate change 😆. Also I am a trained science illustrator and designer (graduate certification) and would love to work with you on visual scicomm

Stories like these are the stories that drive Science Haven's mission of changing higher education culture. We cannot afford to keep telling our scientists that learning how to share science is a waste of time. Please follow us for more updates on our mission. #sciencehaven

For all of my NON-science education degreed folks: What science degree have you earned, and please share if you were ever specifically taught how to talk about science with people who have a different worldview than you? I'm looking for whether you received formal training or not

@ravenscimaven I have a Masters in chemistry and I'm currently doing a PhD in chemistry. I had a module on communicating science to the general public in my undergraduate, but that's it. I wish I had more knowledge in this!
