Starting off, let's look at the county seat of Kingston. Only about fifty years prior, the town had been the temporary capital of New York during the Revolutionary War. Sitting on the high banks of the Esopus Creek, Kingston had been settled by the Dutch in 1652, eventually being renamed Kingston once the British took control in 1664. Kingston wasn't the unified municipality it is today (this wouldn't occur until 1872), instead the land was split into three separate villages: Kingston in the northwest, Rondout (Bolton) on a creek spilling into the Hudson River, and Wilbur (Twaalfskill), a hamlet upstream of Rondout. With the construction of the Delaware and Hudson Canal in 1825, Rondout grew from a small farming village to a tidewater coal terminal. Wilbur would become the center for shipment of bluestone to lay the sidewalks of New York City. The effects of the Dutch settlement can still be seen in this map, made over 160 years after the area had been taken over by the British. As you can see, some of the Dutch names for towns can be seen (Twaalfskill) as well as the spelling of others (Rhynebeck in the east is now called Rhinebeck). To the south, in pink, is the town of Esopus. Founded in 1811, the tract of land was settled as a spillover from the main population center in Rondout. It wouldn't be until the middle of the 19th century that the hamlet of Port Ewen would be settled at the northeastern end of the town.

Was on a panel tonight with @FDNYFC and had a good conversation with her before the program began & came away impressed with her commitment to the Fire Department & her excellent interpersonal skills. It’s understandable how feedback about her from the commanders & union leadership is positive.
