Today’s weather: “Gusty winds with blowing & drifting gypsum!”
Seriously, folks, this isn’t snow—it’s the gypsum dunes of White Sands National Park in New Mexico. A surreal day driving and hiking here.
Now that Alex completed his climb....it's storm time! Snow is now falling over our heads, but it will take a few hours to reach the ground...needing to moisten up the very dry Arctic air below.
Light snow will become steadier around 4am then continue at varying intensity into the afternoon. The timing & duration of the change to sleet remains a challenging call. It could change by Noon near the MD border, but not until 5pm north of the Turnpike.
(1/2) A White Christmas looks very likely for northern PA...and it's definitely a possibility across parts of southern PA as well...given 3 storms on tap over the next 12 days (12/14-15, 12/20-21, 12/24-25).

Meanwhile in Lancaster...our brush with the Nor'easter is done (in terms of accumulating snow), but it's frigid with an 8:00am temp of 18 degrees, a North wind of 15, gusting to 23 mph, and a wind chill of 3. #staywarm
The steadiest/heaviest snow of this short event is now moving into Lancaster county. Now through Noontime is the business...then a taper off to mix into early afternoon. Widespread 2 to 4 inches likely. Isolated 5" anyone? Let the business begin...
(1/4)Update anyone? Buy me a Starbucks, and I'll post a snowfall map! Indeed, we have a long-duration, intermittent, & remarkably complex storm on the way. A plowable snow is likely here, but how much falls will key on a variety of ingredients that still aren't baked in the cake.
(3 of 3) Shopping for big-ticket storm? Choose system #2...as I expect a bullseye of 16" to fall somewhere in Central PA (too early to pick the spot). Rain/snow line near Philly. Snow/mix line near York/Lanc...w/ all snow N&W of Harrisburg. So plowable in Lanco. Developing...
(1/4) BIG ANNOUNCEMENT! Earlier this summer, I made the difficult decision to retire from my position as Director of the @millersvilleu Weather Center at the end of August. I’ve been blessed to serve in this role for one-third of a century (yikes!) and to be part of…
A blast from our past: Feb. 12, 1983 @LancasterOnline. Before you comment that it "doesn't snow like it used to"...consider that over the last 10 winters we've had SIX snowstorms of 12"+, whereas in the decade of the 90s we had just THREE, in the 80s and 70s only TWO per decade.
