I am, at the moment, a two-dimensional rendering of a featureless white ovoid with a satin finish, otherwise in a blind panic about climate disruption.

I am not honoring the butcher of Gaza, a man who in my lifetime was more than happy to stand on the bones of mass-incarcerated Americans he considered subhuman just like Palestinians. no rent control proposal is going to bring those people back

It is so so so so so important in this moment to honor Joe Biden. It is truly heroic, like a great act as an American, to have been demanding the job of President for three decades, finally get it, do better than people who beat you in previous primaries, and still step aside.

@rooftop_love I think making it easy to install Level 2s as appliances would achieve a lot more a lot faster.

To complete the test, Sotomayor now needs to resign. If she was at Harvard as recently as this Spring, divulging that she has cried over the court's decisions (tears warranted, no argument) then it's not rational for her to stay.

@BSchmidtTweets @theiaincameron Bunch of state names, although I suppose many of those are names of prominent tribes who lived in those areas and may not have been used as place names before European settlement.

@theiaincameron Place names are fascinating. Immigrant cultures that hold preceding cultures in contempt, sometimes even committing genocide, will keep many older place names. Lots of Indigenous geographic names still used here in the US, especially for smaller rivers/lakes.

The name Glasgow, that of Scotland's largest city, is so old that it predates the era when Gaelic was spoken there. It is, rather, a derivation from Brittonic, a language related to Welsh. It was spoken for over 1,000 years in the Glasgow area. The name Glasgow means: 1/n

@Olivianuzzi I voted for Biden and I’m grateful to him for rising to the occasion. That’s why I voted for him, because I trusted him to do the right thing

The Democratic Party told its voters that they could not be trusted to select a nominee when they effectively shut down their primary process. Now, they are installing a new nominee. American voters happen to like democracy. I predict some backlash.

@CJHandmer @stevebloom55 And interestingly, SpaceX apparently will not bid *unless* the contract is fixed-price.

Budgeted for $250m, already heading >$600m. How is it possible to spend that much money, that quickly, on a robotic moon rover? I've heard a lot about dire NASA funding wedges, and almost nothing about NASA's ongoing catastrophic productivity collapse. I worked there for four years and the only times I got in trouble (coaching conversation with manager's manager or higher) was when I made the mistake of putting into writing ways I had found of saving significant sums of money. There's an entire department whose only job is to estimate project costs - something any quant could get to 90% fidelity with a four line spreadsheet, since the algorithm approximates to "whatever it cost last time + 30%". I run a company that burns about $400k per month - a fortune! And in 2 years we've revolutionized three core technologies (green hydrogen <$2.50/kg, DAC CO2 <$250/T, and intermittent Sabatier reactor) necessary for synthetic fuels, for a total cost of <$10m and with a technical team I can count on both hands. It has always been possible to innovate arbitrarily far on both schedule and budget, but it has been a long time since anyone at NASA showed the least interest in generating more value for money.

After a comprehensive review, we are discontinuing development of our VIPER (Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover) project. We are committed to studying and exploring the Moon, and will pursue other methods to accomplish many of VIPER's goals: go.nasa.gov/3W0WSWI

Could you also give us a plot of per capita emissions by country? Some folks need to lead and move faster and drive reductions in cost of technology so others can follow. Solar and wind being widely adopted in these countries though they are unfortunately still investing in coal/gas. Likely will go away in 5-10 years if we do our job and reduce cost of new technology as happened with solar and is happening in EV's.

@bern_identity To be honest, I don't envy Elon's situation. His two big companies, the ones he's dreamed about for decades, are very vulnerable to a Trump presidency. And Trump won't consider neutrality acceptable. It's part of what happens when fascism is on the ballot!

Surely not surprising. Elon is trying to recruit Vinod Khosla to get on the tech billionaire Trump train.
