The Polygamist is dumb, but not in the way you think. Part of the plotline’s climax is that Jonasi Gomora’s first wife hires a HIV+ woman that she met a few years earlier to infect her serial cheater husband by sleeping with him. Jonasi subsequently dies because he doesn’t take his HIV meds. The story here is that the woman tasked with passing on the infection still appears healthy between the time she’s infected and when she infects him, which presupposes that she’s on ARVs, yet she’s simultaneously highly infectious enough to infect someone after one encounter. This storyline is completely detached from scientific reality, perpetuating outdated HIV stigmas and ignores how transmission and treatment actually work. The reality is that the fundamental principle of HIV is Undetectable = Untransmittable. So if the HIV lady is healthy because she is consistently taking her ARVs, as her health status implies, then her viral load would be undetectable. In the real world, U=U has proven that a person with an undetectable viral load has ZERO risk of transmitting the virus sexually. By making her healthy yet somehow highly infectious, the show ignores the primary mechanism of how HIV treatment works. Then there’s just the inefficiency of sexual transmission of HIV. The chances of a female infecting a male in penile-vaginal intercourse is just 4 out of 10 000 exposures, or a 0.04% chance per act, and that’s assuming the female partner is untreated and has a detectable viral load, which, going by how the show’s plotline treats Jonasi’s progression with the infection, she herself should have been sick and dying by the time she’s approached. The idea that Jonasi subsequently dies simply because he didn’t take HIV meds implies a rapid progression to AIDS and death, as his twins are barely 3 or 4 years old when he dies, when they must have 2 or so when he got infected. No strain of HIV is this potent. In the end, the writers sacrificed medical accuracy for dramatic flair, falling back on an old, misogynist trope of the “infectious femme fatale” while completely ignoring the realities of ARVs and transmission statistics. If the writers wanted to keep the plot point of a highly effective assassination via HIV, shifting to a parenteral route like an infected blood transfusion or an injection would have made the scheme a lot more plausible. A blood transfusion has an estimated per-act probability of 9250 out of 10 000 exposures. That is a staggering 92.5% transmission rate from a single event. Compared to the microscopic 0.04% chance of insertive penile-vaginal intercourse. A contaminated transfusion or heavy blood injection turns the plot from statistically impossible into a near-certainty. Also, since the show already established that the wife has a corrupt doctor on her payroll, a medical frame-up is a perfect fit. Jonasi gets into a minor accident, or is drugged and admitted to the hospital, the doctor claims he needs a blood transfusion and deliberately uses a contaminated batch🤷🏾‍♂️ The entire thing is a missed opportunity for the writers, who chose to substitute lazy, stigmatising writing for what could have been a tightly plotted thrilling climax.

I dreamt of writing a book for as long as I can remember, wrote many outlines, but none materialised. There is a disturbing trend of young lawyers trying to be concise. A 2nd-year drafted an executive summary for a banking client using bullet points and plain English. She proudly stated that she reduced a 50-page compliance memo into a 2-page brief. I asked her if she thought the client was paying $950 an hour for brevity. She muttered something about respecting the CEO's time. I explained that clients don't pay us to solve their problems quickly. They pay us to make their problems look so incomprehensible that only we can solve them. I made her rewrite the summary using dense, impenetrable legalese. It took her 12 hours to bury the conclusion on page 42. The client called me the next morning to thank us for our incredibly thorough analysis. Clarity is a customer service concept. We are in the business of intellectual intimidation.

This is good actually. The less you know about programming, the less reason you have to overcomplicate things. There is an annoying Bell Curve kind of situation in programming where you spend decades studying just to realize that whatever dumb shit you were doing in the beginning is the right way.

He’s the ultimate villain I’m afraid

While I bring a close to the "@moniepointng crusades," because this week is going to be really busy for me, just want to say I've contributed my mettle to the "talent gap" and related issues, in Nigeria, both as a trainer, an advocate, and a manager, and I know what I've seen in terms of quality of talent within the Nigerian talent ecosystem. In the first cohort of the Microsoft Leap program, I saw ladies who came in as noobs and studied unrelated topics like Biochemistry, arguing Network Subnetting by the 3rd week of training. Within 2 years, most of them were made Leads and Seniors in the companies they were placed at. Several of them relocated outside the country obviously because employers here didn't see or value their worth. Whether you have a huge following or not, but especially if you do, understand that being the pillar and ladder to those coming after you is the lowest hanging fruit to cement your name in the annals of posterity. I'm not expecting Tosin to apologize, but I'm hoping he reconsiders his statements, and I hope every other Technical Leader in this country have the mindset to elevate young minds and talents who are not the cause of their present predicaments, but use their existing platforms and resources to prune and elevate perhaps unpolished diamonds in the ecosystem. Keep in mind that this is for a "VP Engineering" position. In many organisations, this is next to the CEO or President (apart from Investment banking that have their unique designations). 1. Every world class organisation should typically have an in-house Applicant Tracking System (ATS) or use SaaS ATS platforms out there like SeamlessHR etc. 2. When well structured organizations advertise for vacancies on LinkedIn, they add the external link to their ATS to guarantee a well structured reception of job applications. Because well structured organizations have a strong understanding of data privacy, therefore they can't store candidates' applications on LinkedIn. 3. The above is basic. 4. Using Microsoft forms mean that you're just harvesting data, not moving candidates through a hiring pipeline. 5. This dude is "experienced" and doesn't know the above. One now imagines how in the world he has an opinion on what world class talent and world class companies look like. 6. Finally, for the position of Vice President, these are mostly gotten from soft referrals, not on LinkedIn "Easy Apply" which shows a blatant disrespect of potential applicants. 7. When they don't get applicants, the next thing is to scream, "there's a talent gap in Nigeria!" Funny people.

This was the Manager that taught me empathy and paying people their worth at Microsoft. Mind you, I had not worked more than 3 years professionally as a software engineer, but even after initial agreements, she came back and said, "I increased the suggested gross salary." I wasn't a Senior person or anything o, but she probably contemplated a few post-interview and said, "nah, let me increase this." If you like, allow one man from Akungba to make you not see your worth!

If Interswitch, a Nigerian-owned Group and an Africa-focused integrated digital payments and commerce company, didn't give Tosin Eniolorunda - the then 'tech rookie' - who studied Mechanical Engineering in Obafemi Awolowo University, an opportunity; he perhaps might not have achieved the height and success he's today. The same Nigerian environment that groomed him, now suddenly become a subject of ridicule where Nigerians are no longer 'intelligent or smart'. No matter how 'concerned' he's, Tosin erred! There are many Tosins who have made it and successful by virtues of some factors, but now perceive other aspiring Nigerians with disgust as not smart, intelligent or serious. If God has been gracious to you, please be humble in your grace!

THIS IS WHY THIS IS PERSONAL TO ME. Really, I'm coming from the simple position of "don't demarket Nigerian talent in tech". Very simple position. Because I work in the field and also outsource for roles for foreign and local clients. Do you want me to start explaining to them when they start bringing up unfounded issues about talent expertise and productivity because one tech bro decided to say they're not capable?
