Donald Trump just stole $1.7B from us — and he's creating a slush fund to reward his political allies. I've never seen anything like this in my 50 years in politics. It makes Nixon look like a boy scout. cnbc.com/2026/05/18/tru…

The incoming Labour Government insisted it could transform growth and repair public services without reaching for "the tax lever”. In the event that lever was yanked, and yanked hard. Since the election the government has borrowed more, spent more and taxed more ⤵️ buff.ly/EIq0o5n

Ungovernable Birmingham is coming true - Labour and Reform rule out any coalitions - Tories won't work with Greens, nobody wants to work with Independents - Leaving Green/LD as the best option, and they only have 31 seats between them - Government intervention feels inevitable

“I want to rejoin the EU.” Andy Burnham comments at Labour conference in Sep in full, with video
Farrukh@implausibleblog

Journalist, "Rejoin the EU or stay out?" Andy Burnham, "I want to rejoin" "I hope in my lifetime, I want to rejoin the European Union" "I believe in the unions of all kinds. The union of the UK. The EU benefitted this country. Trade unions" "People prosper more when they're part of unions" Earlier in the interview... "Then you come to Brexit... During the 80s and 90s, the growth we had through the European Union masked some of structural problems" "But the minute you come to Brexit, then look at the last decade" "Shouldn't we start calling out the disaster that Brexit has been more directly?" "I think we should" "We've been stuck now with sluggish growth, and all of the aspirations now are harder to achieve as a country" "That's Nigel Farage and Brexiters doing, and you have to hold them accountable for that" Pippa Crerar, "Is there a danger of being seen as the same old Labour pushing to rejoin the EU?" Andy Burnham, "I don't think there's a prospect of joining any time soon, but I do think we should be honest with people" "It's not just on the economy and growth. It's immigration" "Immigration has ben weakened as a result of Brexit" "We've replaced short term immigration from the EU with long term immigration from outside the EU" "Call out Nigel Farage and Brexiters" Journalist, "Do you think Nigel Farage is racist?" Andy Burnham, "I don't know him well so I'm not going to say that. But I do see policies that are discriminatory. And that worries me"

Donald Trump is about to turn Jan 6 criminals into MILLIONAIRES. With your tax dollars. The people who smeared feces on the Capitol walls… …hunted Mike Pence through the halls of Congress… …assaulted cops. He’s creating a $1.7 billion apology fund for them. Disgusting.

Returning to something I have been ringing the alarm bell about, here are five things to note about the move in UK yields since the start of the Middle East War (please see the CNBC chart below): The magnitude is significant: The move is now approaching a full percentage point—a staggering shift in such a short window. "High Beta" turbocharged: The surge has significantly outpaced movements in other advanced economies, reflecting the UK’s structural "high-beta" characteristics and recent domestic political developments. Highly eroded buffers: This volatility comes at a time of not only limited policy flexibility but also a thinning of other economic shock absorbers. "Main Street" as much as Treasury: These yields will not only feed into higher government interest payments but also into mortgage rates and corporate borrowing costs, as well as weaker growth dynamics, placing further pressure on an already strained fiscal situation and the household sector. Multidimensional fallout: The consequences will likely extend far beyond economics, with ripples across financial, political, and social spheres. #economy #UK #gilts #growth #markets

Yep. As I conclude. If government actually, as in genuinely, cared about growth and the cost of living they’d change the law. But as with so many things this govt and the last have done they take the easy political route rather than doing what is needed.

@PJTheEconomist Given the test is in primary legislation, why is it the court’s fault not politicians?

These “equal value” cases are surreal to the point of madness. As @PJTheEconomist says: “One thing is for sure. A govt actually concerned about economic prosperity, and indeed the cost of living, would be altering the legislation as a matter of urgency” thetimes.com/article/51e0d5…

The present political crisis can only deepen when the noise from Labour entails further disowning the fragile electoral terms of its 2024 win: moving left, taxing more, chirruping about the ‘heart of Europe’ are as legitimacy shredding as Truss and Sunak repudiating levelling up.

Bloomberg: “The world has burned through oilinventories at a record speed as the Iran war throttles flows from the Persian Gulf… The rapidly shrinking stockpiles mean that the risk of even more extreme price spikes and shortages is getting ever-closer, leaving governments and industries with fewer options to cushion the impact of the loss of more than a billion barrels of supply, two months into the near-closure of the Strait of Hormuz.” #economy #oil #markets #middleeastwar

This is now becoming faintly ridiculous. How many times can someone 'take responsibility' for appalling outcomes while facing no consequences for them? 'Neither left nor right' might make sense if we knew direction we're headed in. Which we don't. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
