I agree with all of this. Here's the thing, I am of the exact age Mixtape focuses on, where I was a teenager in the 90's. But I didn't relate to, or have the same experiences as, the characters in the game. I didn't rebel against my parents; I didn't skateboard (although I tried, and the best I could do was sit on the board while it rolled down the driveway). I liked music, but wasn't as big a fan as the main character is in the story. I didn't love the music of the era until I had an appreciation of it when I worked for a radio station that played music from the 70's, 80's, and 90's. I didn't have many of the experiences they reminisce about in the game through flashbacks. But what I do relate to is the nostalgia for the era. I 100% understand that this focuses on a very white type of suburban nostalgia, and the 90s were very different for a lot of my friends today than they were for me. I grew up in a very white area and had maybe one or two people of colour total in my school. So I get that this game may not be relatable to everyone. And that's okay. It sucks because yes, we need more games that span many backgrounds, and I hope more folks become developers to tell their stories, and I will love what they make just as much. We all deserve to see a bit of ourselves in games, and when games can best represent our backgrounds, we are richer as a community for it. So yes, Mixtape is extremely popular right now. I love the game and is probably one of my favourite games of all time. But that doesn't negate anyone else's thoughts on the game if they're not as into it as I am.
