@thormungandr I didn't take it to the convention center sadly. I called the hotel to see if it turned up and they said they haven't seen it, and the room has been cleaned already. I have a growing feeling it might have been stolen.

I lost my Magic TMNT Commander deck while at GDC! I didn't even get a chance to play it! I had brought it in the off chance I would play it with folks, but it did not happen. I'm so devastated. That's money and fun completely gone. 😢

I hear ya. Me too. I like what South of Midnight has. Screen reader is decent and navigatioinal assistance is okay. I don't know if they've updated it since launch, but the screen reader, while it reads all menus, it doesn't read the HUD. And the navigational assistance is good, it doesn't really help with vertical paths. Granted like I said I don't know if they've fixed this since launch, it's been a while since I launched it last. So it might have been updated a little.

@stevesaylor Nice! As for me as a gamer, who recently just went from having 2400 vision to light perception I’m waiting on the next big game to have a screen reader and navigational assistance. I’m curious how good it is south of midnight?

@blindmetalgamer I've lately been playing more on PC as I have a gaming handheld that gives a bit of freedom; if I don't want to play at my desk in my office, I can chill in my living room with the screen close enough to my face for me to see.

Calling it. I wanted to stream more Resident Evil 2 today. However, sadly, I've been on camera for over 8 hours today and my eyes need a rest. So I'll be continuing my playthrough tomorrow afternoon starting at 4pm EST. Sorry about that.

I agree with what Steven mentioned. It is a complex situation. Yes, an AI to help solve puzzles or help with a boss can be accessible. It's not the best solution to go about it though. It's taking a shortcut. But more on that in a bit. If you don't take the time to make the game accessible from a design standpoint then that's cheating a disabled player from those teachable moments as you said. So for example when TLOU2 added a "skip puzzle" option, it wasn't because they didn't want to give those players teachable moments. It was if in the odd chance the player gets stuck, with all the accessibility the game had, there was a "break glass in case of emergency" option to skip the puzzle so it doesn't block the player from progressing. It wasn't a shorcut for them. They tried to make the puzzle as accessible as possible, but in the case that the devs didn't plan for they couldn't get past it, the "skip puzzle" let them move forward. I agree with Steven in the potential solutions to help. Because it's not the difficulty that's the problem. It's about giving the right tools for disabled players to solve the problem themselves without their body getting in the way. Could AI help with disabled players in certain scenarios? Maybe, it depends on how it's implemented. The biggest problem with AI that's posed as potential accessibility is that the LLM being created does not have data that includes disabled players in that data. It's based more likely on non-disabled players. So if the Model isn't even taking disabled players experiences into account, then AI will not be a suitable accessible solution for those disabled players. I hope that makes sense lol. Typing is not my strongest suit lol.

Ok I need some help from my accessibility expert friends on this one. Is solving hard puzzles for you or beating bosses for you making the game more accessible, or overriding the teachable moments and earned achievements in a game?

Microsoft has filed a patent for an AI-assisted Xbox feature. It would let AI or trained human helpers briefly take over your game when you're stuck on a tough part, such as a hard boss or puzzle. They aim to replace pausing the game and searching YouTube tutorials, making games more accessible.

"We will meet players where they are, and build experiences that are instant and seamless and accessible." Boy, I hope that last part is true. It's hard to realize that, with a large change like this, efforts like accessibility can often be pushed to low priority and could be pushed out entirely. So I hope that when she means accessible, she not only means accessible to all, but that includes disabled players. Xbox has had a culture of accessibility. I hope Asha continues that culture.

At Microsoft's big Xbox all-hands meeting, leaders paid tribute to the team, Sarah Bond, Phil Spencer, and the future — "We are going to start with console, and make sure that we understand that this is our reference experience." Microsoft's gaming team had a big all-hands meeting last week, and the mood was emotional, but also energized and jubilant. Here's what outgoing CEO Phil Spencer and incoming CEO Asha Sharma had to say. Read more: windowscentral.com/gaming/xbox/at… 👇
