The City has launched a Shared E-scooter Pilot Program, offering residents a sustainable, convenient, and low-carbon way to navigate the growing community. These shared e-scooters are owned and operated by @BirdRideCanada, and can be rented for a fee based on time or distance. What you need to know⬇️ ✅The program is enforcing safety through set speed limits, rider age minimums (16+), helmet requirements, and mandatory equipment such as lights and a bell or horn. ✅Promotes courteous road-sharing to protect pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, and e-scooter riders. ✅Expanding equitable access, ensuring micro-mobility options are available across all neighbourhoods. Quick facts⬇️ 🗓️Operating from April through October (weather permitting). 🕕Ride from 6 am to 11 pm (with remove deactivation at 10:45 pm). ✖️Unlike privately-owned e-scooters, the shared e-scooters will not work if ridden outside the City's boundary. ✖️The e-scooters will not go beyond the programmed speed limitations. 💻Residents can report after-hours issues, mis-parked scooters, or safety concerns via the operator's hotline, in-app tools, or the City's Customer Care Centre. Ride safe➡️ visit pickering.ca/escooter to learn more.

@chandnirao_here Fair comment! That’s exactly the point - to start meaningful and directionally focused conversation towards a goal of improving the status quo. I agree with you on shared data - the problem is some city staff use selection bias because they have a goal decided beforehand

@stewartlyons agree wholeheartedly that fragmented governance is holding back progress re transportation innovation and costing us economically. The urgency to modernize is real! Where I diverge: full nationalization under Transport Canada might be too rigid. Complete centralization risks replacing municipal bottlenecks with federal ones, potentially stifling the very innovation we seek. But I get that fundamentally we need to move through approvals faster, esp w/ novel tech. So I briefly looked at how California solved this (somewhat?) without nationalizing; my initial thoughts: 1. The best model could be a blend of clear national-level minimum standards (safety, liability and data reporting) with flexible local implementation and experimentation. Key is creating regulatory sandboxes in specific regions (Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, Vancouver) to pilot and rapidly iterate technologies. Basically, ENCOURAGE experimentation while maintaining safety. 👉👉California’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) established clear guidelines for AV testing and commercialization early on allowing a phased, controlled rollout. 2. Transparent data-sharing: Why did BC ban advanced AVs? Were AV researchers / founders consulted? Why did Toronto ban e-scooters? These decisions should be informed by shared data. Not an expert here, but inviting conversation.

This Logic headline (and article) was unnecessarily divisive at a time when Canada's economic future hangs perilously in the balance. Even a foreign outlet like the @FT did a better job at inspiring action vs division: "Canada absolutely has potential to be a global superpower...But the nation has lacked the visionary leadership and policy framework to capitalise on its advantages." (ft.com/content/d48138…) So kudos to the @build_canada team for creating a thoughtful starting point for how to modify our policy framework better than any national media platform has. Special appreciation to the volunteers with day jobs 🙏. Their efforts and the concerning economic outlook demand that we also roll up our sleeves and engage in equally thoughtful, good faith dialogue. Criticism is absolutely essential and desperately needed but focused on the specific ideas mentioned within the memos and not on the endeavour itself. And I have some, hoping this can advance your overall goal and efforts @ddebow @melkuo 👇
