Fast Radio Bursts Just Solved a Major Cosmic Mystery: Where Is All the “Missing” Matter? For decades, astronomers have been haunted by a baffling problem: we know how much ordinary matter (baryons — protons and neutrons) existed shortly after the Big Bang, but today we can only account for about 10% of it in stars, galaxies, and known gas clouds. Where did the rest go? An international team led by scientists from MIT, using the CHIME/FRB collaboration, has finally found a huge chunk of this “missing” matter — and it’s hiding in enormous, extremely diffuse clouds surrounding galaxies and galaxy clusters. How They Did It Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) — incredibly powerful millisecond-long radio flashes from distant galaxies — turned out to be the perfect cosmic probes. As an FRB travels across the universe, it passes through different types of matter. The more material it encounters, the more its different frequencies get delayed relative to each other, “smearing” the originally sharp burst in time. By analyzing 2,870 FRBs detected by CHIME and cross-referencing them with the positions of over 6 million galaxies from the DESI survey, the team could separate the effects of known galactic matter from the previously invisible diffuse component. The Surprising Discovery The missing baryons aren’t tucked neatly close to galaxies. Instead, they form vast, incredibly sparse “bubbles” or halos extending up to 4 million light-years from galaxies — far beyond what most computer simulations predicted. Galaxies, it turns out, behave like powerful cosmic fountains. Jets from supermassive black holes, supernova explosions, and other high-energy processes blast ordinary matter outward with much more force and reach than previously thought. “We discovered that activity inside galaxies is much more chaotic than we thought. They are more like fountains that push gas out to very large distances,” explained lead author Haocen Wang. This finding helps close the long-standing “missing baryons” problem and shows that galactic feedback processes are far more powerful and influential than current models suggest. With more FRBs being detected every day, this technique will only get more precise — giving us an increasingly detailed 3D map of ordinary matter across the cosmos. What Israel needs to do is take off the gloves immediately and attack Hezbollah in Beirut and throughout Lebanon. With maximum force.
