I agree totally, my thought's were that at the time there were alot of unknown bands with 1 hit song and made a great video and sold albums and the other 9 songs were crap. (we all bought them) Some bands were better live than the albums and are are still on peoples play list because of talent instead of MTV rotation.

Corporate Rock became the genre's downfall IMO. It started in the early 80s and continued on throughout the 90s. The genre has a self-limiting, "boomer" ethos, where the drive for "authenticity" and "roots" stifled innovation, leading to a repetitive sound which was clearly prevalent within the era of the Big Hair bands. That's why I really don't relate well with the music created in the 80s and much of the early 90s. Bands became corporate "sellouts" do to the shift towards more commercialized, radio friendly tracks, heavy MTV rotation, and a focus on massive stadium tours. However I can't blame the bands completely since they were controlled by their labels who were quite heavy handed in their own right by stifling creativity over their desire to create higher sales figures which forced several iconic acts from the 70s to change their style to fit the era. =)

@UndercoverIndy Not to mention the humor arising from the attempt to attach some booze-filled swagger to the music of Styx, Kansas, Supertramp, Boston, Journey, Foreigner, etc. Rock music was solely responsible for its own replacement.

@SwervinOC @CurtKostic34345 @UndercoverIndy And a lot of bands that had great videos, and could reproduce it live. I'm thinking of ZZ Top, Pink Floyd, Grateful Dead. Here in the UK I'd have probably gotten great odds on the bookies for the likes of those three bands to have huge UK hits in the 80s!

@CurtKostic34345 @UndercoverIndy Never thought about it that way before but you are dead on because there were a lot of bands that were selling lots of albums because of great videos but couldn't reproduce it live.

@GeorgeArmitage1 @barnsleysime Add WH & MC to the list of things we’ll have to agree to disagree on! The same with Steps! If a song is good, doesn’t matter who it is (Say You’ll be There is 👌), and I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve been to see @letsmaketragedy , if that counts as fun and whimsy? 😁

@still_image @barnsleysime Interesting, I have never found WH or MC to over sing, I think they use their instruments perfectly. I ❤️ Xtina but she’s one who’s guilty of over singing for me! We might have to agree to disagree on the Steps part, I assume anyone who doesn’t like them hate hates fun & whimsy

@GeorgeArmitage1 @barnsleysime Can’t argue over Houston’s voice, but she does over sing sometimes (see also M. Carey). I’d argue over Steps until my last breath, it has no soul, unlike the original, it’s just karaoke singers warbling over a machine backing track. Twist and Shout by The Beatles is definitive.

@still_image @barnsleysime Trust my ears are fine, I’m the biggest Dolly fan there is, more than just the greatest hits but there is no denying the vocal prowess of WH, the pop power of Steps or the uplifting vibe of Amy’s cover of Valerie. Intrigued if you have any covers you think as the definitive?

@barnsleysime I suppose it’s because Amy’s version is the definitive version of the song, like Steps version of Tragedy or Whitney’s IWALY. Original doesn’t always mean best.

@rant_rate All cars should be painted in hi-viz colours, as they seem to crash into each other quite often. Actually, no, that doesn't seem to work, even when you put flashing lights on them.... share.google/fjzdWpwuij4LIc…

Two totally different songs, written separately, yet each perfectly compliments the other. One as majestic intro, the other spirited outro. Rehearsed twice, recorded in just one take, 11 minutes of sheer brilliance. What a way to start an album. youtu.be/REfKNbNndzo?si…

@MBroomSmith @Barclaycard That’s exactly what they’ve just told me! Until the previous owner updates their address, they are obliged to keep sending them to the address they have on file. The only winner is Royal Mail!

Hey @barclaycard! For two years I’ve been getting regular mail from you, addressed to the previous owner of the property, including a business credit card. At what point does writing ‘Return to sender’ on the envelope and posting them back have an effect?
